    FG numbers off

13 lbs 2-Row, 1 lb Carapils, and 6 oz Crystal 40L. Mashed at 151 for 90 minutes. Per IslandLizard, the trub did sink, and my FG looks to be 1.010. I only expected lower FG, because the first time I brewed it, FG was 1.006. The only difference this time was US-05 versus WPL-001.

    FG numbers off

For the second time, I brewed a Pliny the Elder clone (the first one turned out great and FG was 1.006). For that brew, I used two packages of WLP-001, but because of shipping during the summer, THIS TIME I pitched two packages of US-05. OG was 1.075, I did not use a starter, it took off in...

Different grain and up to 10% of the difference in mash efficiency

No, I was talking about this from Ninoid: "For all Pale Ale malt I use yield 1.037 and for Pilsner malt 1.038"

Different grain and up to 10% of the difference in mash efficiency

If you have a gauge and measuring process that you can differintiate between .001 between the rollers, please share?

Yeast clung to side of carboy

Will this be a problem? Should I rock the carboy back and forth to wash this yeast off the side? I intend to cold crash.

First BIAB batch. How does my plan look?

I use well water and according the Bru N' Water, I usually have to add about 4 tsps of phosphoric acid (10%) and several grams of gypsum to get to a ph of ~5.3 for a 5 gallon batch. Does using this much phosphoric acid affect flavor at all?

    Oxygen for oxygenating wort

If you are talking about the red "welding" cylinders, the only issue is that they are expensive to use! I bought a new 20lb tank at a local gas supply store completely filled for $120. The guy said the oxygen comes out of the same tank as the medical oxygen and that the only difference is the...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I had this made with GFCI, works great! Finally, an inexpensive solution for getting GFCI protection at 240 volts. These folks custom made this with a NEMA 6P on one end and NEMA 6R on the other. All for $69.99 with a 3 day turn around. Great folks to work with...

    Dry Hopping: keg hop? Magnets?

FWIW, the magnets do not need to go in the muslin bags. You can put a large washer in a small zip lock bag inside the muslin bag with the hops. Thus the magnet needs to only be the outside of the carboy. I have thought many times of using this technique but so far have just put about 3 psi of...

Feel like I’ve been ripped off

Nah, they put the new one the shelf and sold it for $75!

Tips you would like to have known when you first started brewing?

6+ hours to bottle!? What, are you bottling 20 gallons? I keg everything but my stouts, but when I bottle 5 gallons into 22 once bottles, it only takes around 1 hour.

Anvil Foundry, Going to Brewer’s He!! For This.

It works great as a sous vide.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

It did for me, but I changed a couple other parts of the process at the same time such as more sparge water, rice hulls.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

After 10 or so brews with the Anvil, I have learned that what works for me is to ignore Anvil's recommendation and use a 1.75 ratio along with 8 oz of rice hulls in with the grains. I just increase the sparge amount to get my pre-boil level up to 7 gallons. I also always use the small ring...

    Pliny the Elder

I just kegged a Pliney clone from More Beer and I just tossed in the 5 ounces for dry hopping (which the recipe called for) into the primary (I don't use a secondary) on day 9, and then cold crashed and kegged on day 14. I use a floating dip tube for a no oxygen transfer from the Fermonster...

Reusing Budweiser - A theoretical exercise in foolishness

I would poor it on my vegetable garden. Interestingly, I recently heard Dale Earnhardt Jr. say that back when he drove for Budweiser, and was comped unlimited quantities, although he drank it, and loved it, he used gallons upon gallons on his home dirt go kart track to keep the dust down. :-)

How 2 check FG without adding Oxygen?

When you open the spigot to get the sample, won't you pull Star San through the airlock? Or, if you remove the airlock, won't you pull in oxygen?

    CO2 gone in no time.

Thank you, yes, that is the o-ring I'm talking about. I tried the nylon washer in addition and it still leaks some. I have other regulators without the o-ring that do not leak with only the nylon washer. Pisses me of that some manufacturer would redesign something that works fine with a design...

    CO2 gone in no time.

I don't mean to hijack, but this is related. It seems the new regulators don't require a tank gasket but rather use a rubber o-ring on the regulator. It's a stupid design imho, and mine leaks a little. My local brew supply store doesn't have the o-rings but only the tank gaskets. Does...
