Turning your Fermonster into a complete closed transfer system for cheap!

I have used this closed transfer method for 8 brews now and it has always gone well while putting about 3-5 lbs of Co2 pressure on the Fermonster. However, during my last transfer, the Fermonster first contorted inward when I connected it to the purged keg, so I determined gas wasn't going in...

    Most overrated beer

Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager. It was decent before InBev took over, now it sucks, imho. Still, it is the top draft seller in most of the pubs I visit.

    Anvil Foundry Mash Eff

    Good advice, will try.

    Anvil Foundry Mash Eff

I guess I wasn't too clear regarding the issue. In the past, I've gone by the strike temps listed in the Foundry manual. For example, 12 lbs grain, strike temp 159 for a 152 temp mash. I always have the power off for mash-in and I don't turn it on until it gets close to 152 degrees. It...

    Anvil Foundry Mash Eff

Also, I guess it's even a bigger issue with mash temperature stability since the temperature probe is outside in the dead space? I guess that's why when I choose a strike temperature of 159, for example, for a 152 mash, the Anvil temperature reading only drops to156 15 minutes after mash-in...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I guess all these electric systems must have the same issues or use the same software. The only time that I have ever tried to do a step mash with my Anvil Foundry, I encountered an E3 error message (overheated heater). I thought it was a fluke and didn't know it could have been related to the...

Single Vessel Brewing System Temperature Stability

Although, I don't know that the producers of those pumps are concerned that the phthalates, PVC's, and BPA's that could be in the pump material causes cancer in goldfish.

Single Vessel Brewing System Temperature Stability

I'm not sure why you say: "Since recirc into the top of the malt pipe only does not move this liquid?" I use an Anvil Foundry and since the drain is in the bottom and outside the malt pipe, the pump pulls from this drain to recirc to the the top, seems to me it pulls liquid from the side of the...

Setting grain mill gap with credit card

I have been using a feeler gauge set at .035 for over 20 millings. Works great, efficiency has been spot-on until recent problems with Anvil Foundry!

    Clean Bottles

Pour, rinse with hot water, store on a bottle tree to dry. Bottling day- rinse again with hot water (in case bug crawled up in there), star-san, and bottle. Just that simple, never a problem.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Would appreciate you input regarding temperature consistency and accuracy. I've had my Foundry for over a year now and have done 16 brews with it. I have never checked the mash temperature with a temperature probe (highly accurate) until recently. In doing so, I notice that, although the...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I just turn it from the outside and as TB said, the inside goes along for the ride. After a couple dozen brews, have never had a leak (knock wood!)

Your thoughts on rice hulls for BIAB

Never used rice hulls but ready to a heavy rye. Do you add the rice hulls before milling or to the already milled grains?

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I also point the dip tube down at 6 during recirc, and then when I begin chilling, I point the whirlpool arm counter-clockwise and also point the dip tube counter-clockwise at 15. It made a huge difference in clarity when I started doing this. I now don't have the need for the hop spider.

    Maybe dumb question, I dunno?

Yes it is. Very helpful, thanks, that settles it for me. Will check regulator gauge next, maybe it's malfunctioning and I really haven't been carbonating at 10 psi.

    Maybe dumb question, I dunno?

I was just told it was Co2. Would that make it harmful to drink? It still tastes great although, as I said, it's under-carbonated.

    Maybe dumb question, I dunno?

A friend gave me what looks to be a very old Co2 steel tank filled with Co2. I'm using it to carbonate my latest keg of a beer that I've brewed many times and am using the exact same psi, time, and process as before. However, the beer just doesn't seem to be reaching anywhere near the level of...

    Disassemble Ball Lock Disconnects?

I disassemble and clean mine after every brew/transfer. Otherwise, I have found that moisture stays in the tubing and I have had it turn to mold. I have also lost many flat o-rings, "down the drain." I buy them by the dozen now. One thing I have always wondered about though are the pins...

    Cold Crash Question

I use a modified Fermonster and put 5 psi on it during cold crash. I have never had a problem with any collapsing. Although, once I forgot to turn on the CO2 and woke up in the middle of the night a remembered. Good thing, because it was down to 45 degrees and was collapsing like it was being...
