    Irish Red Ale

Not to jack your thread/recipe, but how would this recipe do with a single infusion mash? I'm looking to do an Irish Red for my second batch this weekend and this came up in my search. I'd like to get into stepped mashes eventually, but I need to get the brewing basics down first. Hope it turns...

Any advantage to move to secondary before bottling?

Sunday we're bottling our first batch, which will have been two weeks since brewday. Would there be any advantage to moving the beer to secondary to get fermentation to stop before we bottle? I know moving it always risks infection and whatnot. Thanks for the help. Cheers

Best way to take gravity samples?

Well I just tried to take a sample to no avail. I used the racking cane from our siphon, and it was no problem getting it into the carboy without moving it because there was a slight bend it from transferring sprage water on brew day. As I tried to draw the beer out of the carboy with the end of...

Best way to take gravity samples?

I tried to search this but I had a hard time coming up with something. So heres my deal: My dad and I brewed an orange summer ale a week ago, and we've been visually checking it periodically to see how fermentation is going, but I know I need to take some gravity readings. The only problem is...

    Growth on bottom of carboy?

Haha yeah my dad and I wanted to do it right the first time and spend less time having to throw out crappy beer! Hopefully he'll let me take the thermostat back to school too!

    Growth on bottom of carboy?

So this is probably just part of the yeast growth, but this being my first batch ever its all still a bit new to me, so just looking for some confirmation! Also, the fridge we're fermenting in was reading at 65F, and the fermometer is reading about 64F: this is a bit cool for fermentation...

    Questions after first brew day

It's hard not to love smelling like hops after completing your first batch of brew. It was a hot day and I was exhausted after, but that was a ton of fun and I cant wait to make the next batch. It was a mostly speed bump-free brewing session, with the exception of having to change propane...

My try at a sparge arm

Gotchya, well I'll definitely try and make my way to the gtg this month if work will allow it, but I'll be going back down to South Carolina for school in August. Just made our yeast starter for tomorrow; the anticipation is killing me! I took a whiff of our grains and its smelling quite delicious

My try at a sparge arm

We took it at Triad Hombrew Supply in Greensboro. They're located at the intersection of Guilford College Rd and West Market. I assume Worthawg's is the local home brewers club?

My try at a sparge arm

Well pops and I did a group class together and we got our hands dirty, but this batch on Sunday will be our first on our own. I've been lurking around HBT, so I've picked up some ideas here and there. I like to try and learn as much as I can before I do something the first time. So yeah. Gotta...

My try at a sparge arm

My dad and I are making our first batch of brew this weekend and I'd like to do a good sparge, so today I made my first attempt at a sparge arm. Here are the results. I used 3/4" CPVC with primer and cement. it measures about 19x9". Ive got 7/64" holes drilled in it all around the outside. I...

    First brew day on Sunday

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm starting to think we should skip the secondary fermentation, partially because its not vital, but mostly on the account that with a secondary and bottle conditioning I'll have to go back to school before I can taste it! I just wanna get some beer made and...

    First brew day on Sunday

Hey everyone, My dad and I are going to be brewing our first batch this weekend. We've taken a class at Triad Homebrew Supply in Greensboro, NC so we've got a decent handle on what we think we should be doing. We're using a Truebrew kit with a glass carboy, and we've got an extra carboy...
