CFC chilling in a single gravity fed pass straight to fermenter?

Sidebar: do you recirculate for a few minutes to santize your chiller system? And that effect your inline O2 stone at all? Ever had any issue with wort creeping back up the O2 line?

CFC chilling in a single gravity fed pass straight to fermenter?

I recirculate ice water through my CFC and it still takes me ~15mins+ to get down below 37°C/100°F and I almost never end up at pitching temp. My cooling system usually stalls at 26°C/78°F. Now granted, I'm recirculating the same 6 gallons of chiller water continuously and water can only cool...

    Critique a Festbier Recipe

Err.... I'll rebalance the Vienna and pilsner then. I'm trying to avoid a Marzen. Hoping for something slightly maltier and and crushable.

    Critique a Festbier Recipe

Getting a good response from this. Lots of good feedback in this thread. After further tinkering with Beersmith, I've come up with this: This uses the "Yellow Full" water profile and uses 4% acidulated to get the projected mash pH down to 5.42. Amt Name Type %/IBU Volume 9.0 gal...

    Critique a Festbier Recipe

What is a reasonable amount of acidulated malt? 12oz? I redid the water profile last night and only needed 12oz to get to 5.3pH "on paper." I also swapped a couple pounds of pilsner for a couple pounds of Vienna malt. I have 34/70 available. If I can get away with fermenting at ~74°F, then...

    Critique a Festbier Recipe

Ed, I am shooting for something sessionable and not too sweet. My recipe OG is 1.054 / 21.2IBU / 5.6SRM. Duly noted on the water profile though. I'll ditch that in favor of something a bit simpler.

    Critique a Festbier Recipe

Looking for feedback on a festbier recipe, although a pseudo festbier actually... I was playing around with a recipe in Beersmith last night and this is what I came up with: Kettle RIMS system I use roughly 60% efficiency Boil size: 7.5 gallon Batch size: 5.5 gallon Beersmith Munich water...

Accidentally used Special B instead of Black Patent

My initial read was "Hmm, I bet that'll be an interesting beer."

Looks like AB InBev has sold Northern Brewer

I got an order in from Midwest a couple weeks ago. I don't use them for much as my LHBS gets 80% of my business and Adventures in Homebrewing/Austin Homebrew Supply get the other 20%. But I wanted another Big Mouth Bubbler and Depth Charge lid so I placed an order.

Icemaster Max 4 to Anvil Cooling system

So, basically, you need to go from 3/8" tube to 3/16" and back to complete the circuit? Try a 3/16x3/8 barb reducer: https://www.amazon.com/Beduan-Reducer-Reducing-Fitting-Splicer/dp/B0823RBHN2 *Doesn't have to be that fitting but something like it will work. -Or- something I did with my...

Opening My Own Local Home Brew Shop

I have no idea where you are out in West Texas but there's an outfit called Kegconnection that's in Commanche. I've done some business with them before. Just ordered some cleaning supplies, actually. Either them or one of the shops in Fort Worth is likely your best bet. That, or deal with...

    Suggestions for Scottish Ale

Brewed this recipe back in January - principally because I needed to make a large batch of yeast to ferment a Strong Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy) over afterwards. This was well reviewed by the folks I allowed to try it. This is a five gallon recipe, based on roughly 60% brewhouse efficiency. I...

    Uh oh. Wild yeast? Infection?

I was, yes. Time to mix up a new batch. Likely so. Which is why I'm going to use Iodophor when I rebrew it tonight.

    Uh oh. Wild yeast? Infection?

Well I "StarSan'd" the entire set up before pumping the wort in. I did exactly nothing different than I've done countless times before. This is my first infection in 10+ years of brewing. My best guess is is my batch of StarSan needs replaced and/or since I brew outside, something wild found...

    DIY glycol tank idea.

That is certainly less expensive than purchasing a ready-made unit. I wonder what efficiency you could get of that?

    Uh oh. Wild yeast? Infection?

Well, if it turns out well, save the trub and repitch it. You can tell everyone you have a "house strain."

    Uh oh. Wild yeast? Infection?

Roughly the same thing happened to me. Spent seven hours Saturday brewing a saison, didn't get around to pitching the yeast until Monday afternoon. Arrived home Monday to pitch my starter to this: I dumped it because it reeked of mushrooms growing on wet dogfood. I have no time or desire...

    California Cancer Warning

Because laws; laws interpreted very literally. If it meets California standards for potentially causing cancer, they slap a label on it.

Cam locks - do I need hose clamps?

All my hose connections (camlock or otherwise) are mechanically secured in some form. As day_trippr said, I try to keep things simply and I don't know like the idea of being sprayed by hot wort.
