I can't believe it!

Wicked. Can you drink beer from the trophy?

    pre boil gravity way off????!!!

Do not trust temperature adjusted hydrometer readings. It is non-linear and and the error gets larger as the temperature climbs. Either cool your sample down to < 25C or use a refractometer. Also. Check the calibration of your hydrometer, and make sure to use distilled water. My hydrometer...

    pissed off!

Beersmith's estimates are just that, estimates. You have no way of knowing what the real maximum sugar potential of the grain was. Being a natural product, there will always be variations that you simply cannot predict. There will also be minor variations in the malting, in the age of the...

    Thermometers

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/ive-had-these-pos-traceable-thermometers-104560/ There's a good thread on this already. I like my thermopen, but I have only brewed with it once so I cannot yet speak to its durability. It was not the cheapest thermometer in the world, but it had the highest...

I've Had it With These POS Traceable Thermometers!

I just used my thermopen for the first time brewing. It is very nice -- it settles pretty quickly, is easy to hold and read. I got the 9" probe and that seems a good choice. The only question now is the durability.

    What's your most expensive brew?

The very first. If I hadn't brewed that, I would have never needed to upgrade my boil kettle, by a burner, IC, etc., etc., etc.

I've Had it With These POS Traceable Thermometers!

I just acquired a Thermopen that uses a nice, long 9" K-type thermocouple from Thermoworks (ThermoWorks – Plug Mount Thermapen – Use any Type K probe with the versatile Thermapen. Small and Accurate.). I am hoping the extra length of the probe will help me keep the sucker dry. The...

    It's Friday...who's brewing this weekend?

A blonde to bottle and a brunette to dry hop. The yeasties are getting busy with themselves in the starter to brew another batch of Mt. Crumpet (2-hearted clone) tomorrow.

To Brew or Not to Brew!?

Seriously, that isn't a question. Brew! If the Munton's really poses you a problem, make a starter. If the starter doesn't work, don't brew. If it does, you have made your yeasties happy and that means better brew.

    Start of a Starter FAQ

I don't think there is. I have read in many other posts that you frequently don't get krausen with a starter. I think people recommend the light dme just because it will have the smallest impact on the color of the widest range of beers.

    Anyone ever made Quinoa beer?

I can believe it would be used as a specialty grain, but have no idea what kind of flavors it will bring. I wouldn't think it will add much to SG, so it will mostly be a flavoring thing. It has a fairly thick coating of an alkali on the outside that will likely do unpleasant things to your...

Burner on wood deck? Steam in the house?

What kind of burner are yall using? Even if mine tipped over, the flames wouldn't come near my deck. I suppose if it flipped upside down I may have a problem, but that is an unlikely scenario at best. Keep a fire extinguisher at hand and I wouldn't worry about it. If it really causes you...

heard a story once about oak chips and whisky...

Don't know about fresh cut, but several barbeque supply stores will carry oak, frequently the remains from a charred bourbon barrel. Makes for really good barbeque, and should be just about everything you want. I order from the Charcoal Store (google it).

When is it All Grain time??

There are no levels, I think. You brew how you brew. If you want to brew AG, just do it. It isn't like you need experience points or a Racking Cane of Sanitizing, with a +3 fermentation bonus (although I do have one and they are very nice). If you want to do AG, do it. Read up on it...

    First Brew Day Tomorrow

    1. I wouldn't. I would be worried about over-extracting. Steeping grains is a lot like brewing tea. If you leave the grains in the water too long, you could start extracting tannins and other nasties. 2. Nope. Do whatever you think will work best. I secondary sometimes (either to free up...

    Buckets to Better Bottles

I am thinking of getting some Better Bottles as my primaries, replacing the buckets I am currently using. I have a lot of reasons to think about it, but most importantly I have the budget right now to buy the BB if I want. I do 5 gallon batches with a OG of 1.050-1.060 (ales mostly, and no...
