I had gathered that a zero headspace container was better. Also don't think glass carboys are a good receptacle for boiling liquid. Could be wrong, but those are the 2 reasons I use the winpaks.

I use Winpak cubes from USPlastics to no chill. Immediately after boil, drain kettle into cube, squeeze sides to very top, replace lid, turn upside down to resanitize lid, pop in fermenter till next day. They are minimal size,easy to clean and move and pretty inexpensive.(~$15 each shipped)...

The more you remove before applying the pad will extend the life and effectiveness of it. You CAN, but it's better if you remove beforehand. YMMV :mug:

Very messy. I do not recommend it. The black residue gets all over everything-clothes, hair...
