    LHBS Going out of business

One of the breweries in Portland runs a LHBS with no retail presence - their inventory is all online and you can order online then pickup and pay for your supplies at the brewery itself. Once a week they will deliver supplies to a few select areas (parking lots, etc.) for people who order over...

    Double IPA Feedback

I would cut back on the crystal and carapils - 10% of the grain bill is too much. Also your hop schedule could use some tweaking - I would target ~50 IBUs for the 60 minute addition and then focus on late additions. Move some of those 15 minute hops to a 5 minute and flameout addition. I'm...

Also let your neighbor know about Block 15 in Corvallis - they're pumping out some of the best IPAs on the West coast!

Story Time - How did you get into brewing and craft beer?

I didn't like beer very much when I was a teenager, most of the beer I was exposed to was macro light beer. It was something people drank to get drunk at parties. When I was 21 I tried a Sam Adams Oktoberfest. It was really flavorful and changed my opinion of beer. I found some beers I...

    LHBS Going out of business

Lebanon is a small town. The closest LHBS is the one I go to and it's about a 40 minute drive. Lebanon is also very conservative - probably not too many hippies.

    LHBS Going out of business

Homebrewing seemed to have a big spike shortly after the Great Recession. DIY became much more fashionable as people looked to return "back to the basics". It brought a lot of people into the hobby but now that a decade has gone by homebrewing is probably returning closer to baseline. In all...

    Safe to use this carboy?

I have to say that's extremely weak on Northern Brewers part. That does not look like a scratch to me and they should replace it and get better quality control in place - if a glass carboy breaks with liquid it is at best a terrible and possibly expensive mess and at worst extremely dangerous...

Help me figure out my next brew setup

Wow those SS baskets are extremely expensive. I considered going that route but 5 gallon batches are easy enough for me to handle with a basic pulley system. I'm also not sold on recirculating the mash to begin with - full volume mashes seem to get about the same efficiency whether you...

    Block 15 Sticky Hands Clone?

From my understanding the recipe changes a bit and is never the same when they brew a batch of Sticky Hands - not sure if this is still true now that they opened their production brewery and can a new batch every week. It used to be a monthly release in a 750ml bottle. People would line up for...

Ball valve on cold side. How sanitary is it?

IMO it's risky to have a ball valve on the cold side but lots of people use them without issue.

It looks like that's not a PID controller though - not sure it's going to work well for maintaining mash temperatures.

Stone Brewing sues MillerCoors for Trademark Infringement

I don't believe intent matters, any lawyer worth his weight in salt could show that bold facing 'Stone' on a can of beer when there is literally a fairly large craft brewery named Stone could possibly be confusing to a consumer. That's really all they have to prove. This will most likely...

Advice on the move to all grain?

BIAB, full volume mash, spend $10 on a simple hoist. I'll never go back to a 3 vessel setup. I can leisurely knock out a batch in 4.5 hours including pitching yeast and cleanup. You can get better efficiency if you fly sparge but it adds on a lot of time to your brew day. I prefer getting a...

Looking like I’m going to have a lot of beer

Bottled beer shouldn't need more time unless you're talking about carbonation levels or extremely big beers (RIS and barleywine comes to mind). My advice is always focus on quality instead of quantity.

    Washington Selling it all

Are you ever close to the Portland area? I'm interested in the keg setup but Seattle is about a 4.5 hour drive from where I'm at in the mid valley.

Would you share the recipe? Curious to see what a recipe from the 70s is like.

Help me figure out my next brew setup

I went the opposite way - I ditched my stainless mash tun for a bag. It's so much easier to clean out and I prefer doing full volume mashes to save time. I only brew 5 gallon batches though so YMMV.
