    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

I think what I'll do is kick it over into a purged serving keg that I know seals, since I'm concerned about the lack of airlock activity. I'll dry hop it for the intended 7 days with a suspended bag, and then pull it and leave the whole thing for a while and see what happens.

    Pellicle Photo Collection

Apparently I've got a contender for this thread. This is (was) a pale ale I brewed just under two weeks ago. Went to dry hop it tonight and found this: I never got any airlock activity (in spite of fermenting in a corney keg) so I suspect I have an air leak somewhere that started this. It...

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

Well the plot thickens. I actually forgot to take a gravity reading on that APA and before I knew it I'd had it in the primary for almost 2 weeks. Pulled a sample today and it had in fact attentuated down to 1.012 in spite of absolutely 0 airlock activity. Popped the lid to dry-hop and found...

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

It's in a 10 gallon corney keg. I've never had one this inactive that was actually doing anything, but there's a first time for everything I suppose. For comparison I brewed an ESB last night, same process (minus the scorched spot in the kettle), pitched a dry pack of Lalbrew ESB yeast, and...

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

72 hours, no activity. This one's going down the drain tonight. I will take a gravity reading and a taste, though, in the interest of science...

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

Well fate may have intervened. Almost 48 hours now with no airlock activity with my always reliable US-05. I'll take a gravity reading tomorrow, but if it's not going anywhere I'm not repitching and it's going down the drain.

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

Lol, yep, that's basically what happened. It's soaking in PBW now so I can scrub it off. Definitely smokey.

    Scorched Wort, Dump or Finish?

Had a first last night. Managed to scorch some wort on a stovetop with a 1500w burner. I believe it's because my hop spider sat almost on the bottom of my kettle and must have trapped a small pocket of wort underneath? The burned patch was right in that area. I think I'll switch to one of...

Double IPA Pliny the Elder Clone

Here's my stab at the PTE. I've never had the original, but I'll say this might be the best IPA I've brewed. I did cut back on the crystal (personal preference). TBH I think I want to up the second dry-hop a tad next time, but I can tell this is gonna go quick in spite of the ABV. Also this...

Stainless steel basket for BIAB brewing- cheap!

No, it actually drilled very easily with the proper tools. A sharp, good quality bit at slow RPM's. You'll need a vise to keep the tube well centered under the drill. I didn't spot the holes first, but was prepared to if it wanted to skate off the sides and also don't try drilling through...

Stainless steel basket for BIAB brewing- cheap!

I bought a 14" pre-threaded stainless pipe nipple from McMaster-Carr and drilled 1/16" holes in it. Could have probably gotten away with a 13" pipe nipple. The PID is a EBSP200 from Electric Brewing Supply. I bought the Brew Chief used from Facebook marketplace like that from a guy who had...

Stainless steel basket for BIAB brewing- cheap!

Here's a pic of mine in a 10 gallon Polar Ware kettle. The feet are on the bottom. I'm considering cutting the feet down on the basket so it's under the top of the kettle. I've ran it once like this and got really good efficiency, but thanks to the kettle size and basket volume I had to add...

First test of my stovetop RIMS

Cool, that'll be easier to clean too. How fast do you usually recirculate?

First test of my stovetop RIMS

Do I need to spread out the returning wort any, like a hose full of small holes, or it doesn't matter?

First test of my stovetop RIMS

Made a batch of NEIPA this weekend on the RIMS setup. My efficiency was a little bit low. Came in right around 70% just for the conversion (assuming my new refractometer is fairly accurate) and only around 62% brew-house (although being a super hoppy beer this didn't help me any). I left my...

Kegging my first beer this weekend, have some questions

I usually weight the bag with stainless ball bearings and let it sink. I don't have anything to tie it to in the keg. That's a good idea about the counterflow of CO2.

Kegging my first beer this weekend, have some questions

Got another beer brewing, the PTE clone, and being an IPA I really want to get the oxygen exposure down to a minimum. I'm fermenting it in a 10 gallon corny and purging a keg for it with the off-gas. I will need to dry-hop but I imagine I can just open the lid for a second to drop in the hop...

First test of my stovetop RIMS

I've scrounged up enough parts to give RIMS a try. March pump through a BrewHardware RIMS tube with an Amazon element and a Brew-Chief controller. 15 gallon kettle, 400 micron recirculating BIAB bag, and a false bottom just to make sure I always have suction evenly across the bottom of the...

Kegging my first beer this weekend, have some questions

Well after spending most of a Saturday scrubbing, rebuilding, and pressure-testing kegs I kegged my first 5 gallon batch. This was in a bucket fermenter with no spout so a totally closed transfer wasn't possible. As a compromise I starsan-purged a keg and then ran an autosiphon in through the...
