Apfelwein smells like nail polish remover...?

Alright will do. Like is said I'm pretty sure I hit my fg, but I have to take a couple more readings. I'll let it sit regardless. I only asked because mine first batch of apfelwein fermented out and cleared in two weeks. Thanks.

Apfelwein smells like nail polish remover...?

Hi all, So I started this batch of apfelwein about 4 weeks ago. It's about a 6 gallon batch, and is the standard recipe for the apple cider save for some pomegranate juice. 5 gallons AJ 2 litres Pom 1 lb Corn Sugar 1 Pack Notty Yeast After this long, I've hit my fg and it still...

Two things I've learned While Bottling...

I started off making wine and the clamp on my hose broke. This ended up happening..would way rather do beer.

What does your SWMBO think of your brewing hobby(lifestyle for some of you)

As many said before, so long as there is wine made SWMBO is happy. Unfortunately she hates the smell of wort/hops and as we live in a 1bdrm apt, I have to be careful how I brew. Still, she supports my hobby and when we move into a house, suggests I make myself a brew cave.

Need advice about very first Ginger Ale brew

Well I had a recipe for making Ginger beer in a brewing book I got for christmas and gave it a try. The recipe and methods were pretty simple, but I figured I would just give it a try anyways. So the recipe instructions told me to get a jar and start a ginger 'plant', which consisted of...

Nervous about first fermentation tapering after 24hrs

Going out here on a limb, but I'm guessing ed_brews_now is from Canada, like myself, and will be planning to cold crash canuck style, by chucking it outside? I have done this on occasion (keeping an eye on it of course) and haven't had it freeze, yet! Is there another worry about going so...

    How much do you drink?

From waaaay back on the first page..but probably agree with this most: I don't think most on here drink to get sloshed (although on occasion it is welcomed :D). It's because beer is tasty, refreshing, and comforting. Thats why I drink it. I'd drink beer for breakfast if it wouldn't make me...

    Very low SG reading

I often think I mix it well enough, but don't either. For extract, far as I know, not a big deal because it ends up circulating or whatever and mixes completely anyways. But as for mixing methodology, just pour it between two pails (if you have them). Seems to aerate/mix it pretty good.

High OG and amount of yeast....

I had the same question about yeast a few weeks ago. My OG was about 1.077 and I also only pitched one pack. Here's a link to a yeast calculator: http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html But the answer I got was you probably underpitched a little, but it still should be ok. Just give them time...

What am I doing wrong, no holds barred!

I don't have much experience to offer, but have done some of the 'no-no's' mentions above. Specifically, I sanitize with a rag and have no problems. I'm a student and it helps to stretch my cleaner a bit farther (maybe just buy a cloth specifically for your brew equipment if you haven't...

First IPA, but high ABV and low IBU fix?

Sorry I posted the recipe incorrectly. I am working on the metric system (i'm up in Canada) so it was 3 kg of LME, which would convert to 6.6 lbs not just 6. But thanks everybody for the input; you absolutely put all my worries at ease. I'm sure this brew will work out just fine. Happy...

First IPA, but high ABV and low IBU fix?

Yeah I think I'll go with the advice and just chalk this up to a learning experience. I can at least be thankful its still drinkable And, like dcp said, I can always just call it an imperial ale. As for upping my dry hopping, what should I move it to? Double it to 2 oz or so? And the yeast I...

First IPA, but high ABV and low IBU fix?

Hey all, So I've only been brewing for a couple months, and I took my first shot at an IPA last weekend. I'm not sure if its entirely an IPA, but it seemed close enough. Unfortunately, I made a huge noob mistake and am kicking myself right now, but was hoping for some advice on maybe what I...

    Apfelwein - Backsweetening With Juice

Well i just got home from school and checked the SG. It dropped from 1.022 to about 1.020 in the course of about 6 hours. Course of action? If new krausen is evidence of fermenting, which I highly suspect it is, i'd like to stop it, not let it ferment dry again.

    Apfelwein - Backsweetening With Juice

So it took a while, but I followed your steps for sweetening my cider. It has been three days since adding the juice, and SG is the same as it was when I added the juice. The cider was clear, but has become cloudy and somewhat foamy on top...should I continue to the bottling step or wait and see...

    Apfelwein - Backsweetening With Juice

Hey everyone, First time posting on the forum, although I've been reading threads for the last several months. The site, community, and knowledge here is truly great! Look forward to hopefully being a part of it all. So I have a batch of Apfelwein I'm giving out for Christmas. I let it...
