    Pests

From the pattern I would guess little caterpillars. At least that's what I dealt with last year. They hung out on the underside of the lea ves, relatively sheltered from causual spraying and never seemed to stay on one leaf for long, making them difficult to catch in the act. But I could be...

Location x 3, where to move my hop garden to? Dividing and moving my murdered hops.

I'm setting up my trellis this coming weekend and have been back and forth on the idea of using trailer winches for lowering the top cable. I would love to see some photos of your setup and any input on how well it works around your center posts when the ropes are tied to them. Cheers, BTW

    Help identifying these bines

What Jonas said. In the past, this has screwed with my head as I tried to confirm lineage of plants given to me by friends. As stated, plant to plant, the leaves can be rather different, especially when young (in my experience). Again, in my experience, as the plants mature the discrepancies...

2015 : Anyone have their hops growing yet?

Oshkosh, WI- These two potted (second year) centennials broke ground about 2 weeks ago. The 15 plants I have in my garden (also second year) are all putting shoots up right now. I potted 55 rhizomes in nursery pots last Sunday, about 7 of those have shoots up already. I need to get the trellis...

Did my hops die over winter?

It's still a little early to tell, give it another week or two. If no shoots are seen, carefully dig the plant up and check for signs of life (new roots, white shoots). Here in Wisconsin, I have lost several plants to prolonged negative temps, especially in pots. If nothing comes up within a...

what does your hop yard set look like

Here's what I did last year in my 6x12 veggie garden. These were grown for wedding decoration and will be relocated this year into a proper field (that I am still building the trellis for)

FS: Two USED 15 gallon Oak Barrels

BGBC is correct. It seems I repeatedly fat fingered it bringing up the "quote" screen. Put if I use my pinky I can get it. Apologies, good luck with the sale.

    Cornelius Liquid Dip Tube

Need a liquid dip tube for an otherwise complete corny keg. Willing to trade or purchase, shoot me your offers. Thanks!

    Glass carboy explosion

Two things to consider 1) for the fermentor to suck the blow-off liquid backwards would require a significant cooling event to occur without any positive pressure created by the beer/yeast 2) to be clear, the blow-off liquid doesn't have to be sanitizer as it will never travel backward during...

    Glass carboy explosion

I think another possible problem is that many (im not saying the OP did, but maybe) people put their blow off tube too deep under water. This added head pressure makes it more difficult for a clog to clear, particularly in "small" hose (which I use with no problem all the time btw). Don't...

DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

So yeah. Sorry for the ramblings and tapering off of sentences... But I'm pretty jazzed about milling 32# in 3:34 with next to no effort on my part. Also, Buster-cat sighting at 1:09!

DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

My MM3-2.0/AAAW-PG mill station is not entirely complete, but is functional. I took a pile of photos and intend to post a build thread once the final polish has been put on the rig. In the meantime, I wanted to share my excitement over using this mill WITH the power grinder motor for the first...

Baking soda to bump up ph?

For what it's worth, I've been having some fun with this. I punched a stout recipe into BruNWater and used a thin mash (I mash thicker than many) and even with 10% roasted malts, 100% RO water, and 2.0 qrts/lb the mash pH theoretically would not drop below 5.4 Neat stuff. I am now also...

Baking soda to bump up ph?

I had a few minutes to jump on BruNWater, and Yooper is largely right. However, the earlier statement of "water pH having nothing to do with mash pH" is absolutely wrong. I don't claim to be a chemist but a little common sense goes a long way. By using BruNWater and the last recipe I had keyed...

Baking soda to bump up ph?

No? If he is using straight RO water, he is starting at 5.7 (ish) pH (if I'm not mistaken) on account of atmospheric CO2 creating carbonic acid
