DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

No sh!t, there is plenty of room. That's what I get for playing around on Amazon prematurely. I picked up a on/off switch for a router here: http://www.amazon.com/Rockler-Safety-Power-Tool-Switch/dp/B001DT13B2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1422201456&sr=8-5&keywords=router+on+off+switch So I...

(keg) Does the 1st pour in the line usually taste bad?

This is a common thing, but if you asked me to explain it... I couldn't. I just know that my first few ounces go down the drain and that you never want the first pint at your local brewpub. I think a lot of people just don't notice it...or run shorter hose and thus get a lesser dose of "stale"...

DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

Just out of curiosity that needs to be satiated prior to Monday... The inside of that electrical box on the side of the motor, is it pretty jam-full of capacitor and wiring? I've been planning on a remotely located switch, but I'm wondering if right on the motor is feasible.

DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

Looks good Wreck :mug: My motor is slated to arrive on Monday, which drives me nuts because the wife and kids are away all weekend and I would love a "me" project.

Show me your diy vent hood.

Here's mine, the "stainless bowl" design over the boil kettle. My spin is in the jog I did with the piping, this trap cuts down DRASTICALLY on dripping back into the kettle.

    Bottling tips to reduce oxygen?

Oxygen still gets in past the caps. Steve Dresler of Sierra Nevada has some articles out there. There is some osmosis effect that allows it over time that I do not fully understand. That said, to avoid the initial dose of atmosphere, I offer my technique for bottle filling off a keg. Once the...

Removing watermelon extract taste from lines

You can wash the soapy water out, with water... like dishes.

Removing watermelon extract taste from lines

Soapy water has worked best for me in removing persistant flavors that make it through a BLC cleaning, but sometimes the line just needs replacing. Like root beer, I just keep that line and reuse it for only that purpose as you will never get the flavor out. Ritebrew sells 100' boxes of bevlex...

DIY Grain Mill Station...Another MOTOR Question

So I just pulled the trigger as well. After nearly 5 weeks of trying to circumvent the middleman I cannot find a cheaper way to get a better/cleaner motor than Allamericanaleworks. The motors are available from china, but the shipping on a single unit puts it above AAAW price. And I can build...

Home Built Grain Mill - From Scratch

My brother built my first grain mill, had rollers knurled like Csuho's. The small diameter and lack of deep knurling caused it to constantly slip. Was a shame to retire it with its otherwise primo-design (cammed adjustment, ballbearings). No amount of O-rings could keep that thing spinning...

6mm? The spec sheet says the groove is 7mm. The motor did not include a key? Thanks for posting, keep the build pictures coming!

    India Pickled Eggs (IPE)

Thought I would share my recipe for hop-pickled eggs. You can fudge the numbers a little and/or substitute ingredients, but the general recipe is: 36 hardboiled eggs 2 half gallon mason jars 5 cups of water 2 cups of malt vinegar 2 cups of apple cider vinegar 1 cup white vinegar...

Effects of adding water part way through mash

+1 for thicker mash As for ramifications? You could alter your temp and will almost certainly change your pH. You're not magically going to get any extra room outside of the initial dissolving that occurs

Mash Tun Manifold - Weighing It Down?

In my old setup with coolers, I had your typical stainless braid manifold. That damn thing always moved around until I "homebrew-fixed" it with a butter knife and some cable ties. This held it in a circular shape and kept it on the bottom of the tun, where it still remains, despite being owned...

Home Built Grain Mill - From Scratch

Very nice job. And the "other" category of DIY is where all the good stuff is (like this). It is covertly named so as to cut down on posts about "my ability to be the one-hundredth person to follow instructions and build the same stir plate as everyone else." Oh, and love the decals!

What's your E-Keggle boil off rate?

    1) 13.5 boiled down to 11.0 (10.5 into fermenters) 2) 5500w 3) I use a pulse width modulator seperate from my PIDs for boiling. The knob is marked at the 2/3 position (to achieve 6qrts boil-off) but the measured average amperage of 18a (23 max) divides out at 78%
