    A quick question on oxidation

Ahh ok, I did miss that. Phew!

    A quick question on oxidation

Don't most people use the 6.5 gallon buckets as primaries for their 5 gallon batches? I know I do. I've been letting all my beers ferment for 3 weeks before bottling and they all have 1.5 gallons of headspace. I've only done 4 batches, but I've had no issues yet. If anything, your argument...

    A quick question on oxidation

Bottle them and drink them after you've already knocked back 4-5 good beers. You'll hardly be able to tell a difference.

    Bottle conditioning

Fwiw, I bottled my stout 5 weeks ago and it's just starting to get carbonated.

    bucket fermentor cleaning?

Seems to me like the bucket should still work fine for Cream Ale's.

    Initial signs of failure/success?

Just pull off the airlock. I don't think any will get sucked into the airlock by pulling it off. It usually happens to me when I try to pull off or put on the lid with the air lock attached. So for future note...if you take off or put on the lid, remove the airlock first. If some water...

    Initial signs of failure/success?

It's not bad at all as long as none of the water gets sucked back into your bucket. However, it's possible for it to get sucked back in due to pressure changes and if you move the bucket around. It's safer to use vodka or some sanitizer in there just in case. It's not too late to pop up it...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Thanks. Did you add the extract late in the boil? I've never used DME before so I'm not sure if it has the same advantages of adding LME late.

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Has anybody tried doing the extract recipe as a partial boil (about 3 gallons) then topping up to 5? If so, any adjustments need to be made? I tried searching, but couldn't find anything. Just got a kegerator and am looking for a quick turnaround recipe like this for a cookout at my house in...

    When to bottle

OG doesn't matter. Check the gravity now and check it again in a few days and if it hasn't moved, you're safe to bottle.

5 or 6 gallon better bottle?

That's true. Only reason I bought a better bottle was because I'm still new to this and still enjoy seeing the action. I figured that might be part of the reason why he was looking into getting a carboy. If you don't care, then definitely just save the money and get some more buckets.

5 or 6 gallon better bottle?

Why couldn't he just use the 6 gallon better bottle as a primary? That's what I've been doing with mine.

    Kegging

I think even 250 is low unless you find some great deals and get things used. I had a friend give me his old kegerator free, but it was nasty so I had to replace all the tubing and the faucet as well as convert it to homebrew kegs. Just replacing those parts and buying 1 keg was over $100...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Thanks for the response. The big gripe on plastic is oxidation, correct? I have it sitting in a plastic fermenter right now anyways. I don't own any glass carboys. I guess the fermenter is probably thicker plastic than the apple juice jugs, but would it really make much of a difference? I'm not...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Hey guys, quick question. I'm coming up on a month after starting my first batch. I made a 6 gallon batch and what I'd like to do is pull off a gallon to bottle to consume now. Has anybody racked the 6 gallons back into the individual 1 gallon apple juice containers for further aging? I'd...

Advice on all grain brewing equipment

I know I'll be shunned by the DIY'ers, but if the thought of having to do everything yourself to cut costs doesn't sound appealing there's nothing wrong with getting something like this: http://www.homebrewing.org/Beginning-Homebrew-All-Grain-Kit-Upgrade-6_p_1709.html I personally like SOME DIY...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Just started my first batch of this stuff last night. I put 6 gallons into a plastic bucket. After a month or so I was planning on bottling some with priming sugar and putting the rest back in the 1 gallon apple juice containers without priming sugar so I can see whether I like it better...

should you use a wort chiller

I do partial boils and just chill it with ice in my sink. I'm not planning on purchasing a chiller until I move my operation outside and do full boils.
