    Do you support your LHBS?

There is only one lhbs here and I have tried to be a loyal customer but there are problems. I genuinely like the owner but his staffers are a total PITA. They get in the way and try to tell you what to do like get more of this or less of that instead of letting you build your own recipe. The...

    Fermentation Temperature Control

I put my fermenter down into a 30 gallon garbage can that I bought at Walmart for a few bucks. I put blocks of ice, that I freeze in my freezer, in it morning and night and control my fermentation temps down into the middle 60's without any problem. When the water level gets too high, I just...

    Tips on using an auto-siphon

I had the same problem with my auto-siphon. I put a little sanitizer water down the top of it so that it sits on top of the rubber plunger. It stopped the air getting in and my siphon runs all the way to the bottom like it should.

Oops I forgot the vorlauf on my 1st AG

I haven't figured out how to hum while dumping 5 gallons of beer down my throat...:mug:

    OMG! No Airlock Activity!

The OP is absolutely correct, as is Revvy. I brew in buckets and I have had several batches where the fermentation was slow and steady and didn't show up at all in the air lock. The key here is patience. Let the yeast do their job and don't disturb them. Maintain as constant of temperature...

Pumpkin Ale how long in Primary

I did a pumpkin a few months back that is now almost as clear as water. I just let it sit in primary for 5 weeks and then carefully siphoned the clear beer into a keg. I cooled the beer down to 40 degrees before I siphoned it off to help clear the fines out of suspension. The key to good...

Primary & secondary versus only primary

Excellent article, thanks for posting the link.

    What's happening here?? Video included.

I've had that happen, like everyone else said, carefully remove the airlock and replace it with a blow-off hose. You might want to lower the temperture a bit and slow the fermentation a bit.

How do I know when its done fermenting?

If you followed the recipe, that OG is probably pretty close to actual. The more patience you have with your beers, the better they will taste. Good beer is not made, it's allowed to happen.

    When to rack to secondary?

I don't bother racking to secondary with most of my beers. I leave them sit in primary until they are good and clear and then rack to a keg. The taste and quality as well as clarity of my beers improved greatly when I stopped getting in a hurry and let nature take its course with my beers.

How do I know when its done fermenting?

As high as your original gravity is, I would leave that sit in the fermenter for at least a month before racking it off to anything. The reason? The yeast will create a lot of by-products during fermentation, leaving it sit on the yeast cake longer will allow the yeast to clean up after...

Oops I forgot the vorlauf on my 1st AG

I don't worry about the vorlauf step at all. I collect my wort in buckets. I pour them slowly into my boil kettle and when I get to the bottom where the grain fines are, I stop and dump those out on the garden. It's like most other things in brewing, don't worry about it, it's not worth it...

    Mashing Pumpkin & Sweet Potato

I'm going to brew my pumpkin ale myself tomorrow and it works pretty slick. I use canned pumpkin in my mash and it can be a bit messy. I never have any trouble sparging but I drain very slowly out of my MLT and use lots of hot water and keep the mash loose. When it comes down to the end it...

    Can i age in fermenter

I siphon my wort into my fermenter, pitch my yeast and forget about it for at least a month before I even bother to keg and condition. My beer quality went up significantly after I quit fussing over it and started giving it time to become good beer. If you want to move it to a secondary and...

So Oregon wants to raise the per barrel tax from $2 to $47?

Something tells me there is going to be a boom in home-brewing...:)

    Exploding Carboy

Don't give up the hobby just because of one unfortunate incident. I do all of my fermenting with my carboy or bucket contained inside of a 45 gallon garbage can with the lid securely fastened down. This keeps the light out and keeps me from cleaning up messes when something goes wrong. With...

How do you guys get the lid off of your primary fermenter?

Man did you call it right...:drunk:

How do you guys get the lid off of your primary fermenter?

It comes with it's own adapter ring to fit on standard sized buckets. Just drill a hole in the lid and your ready to run.

How do you guys get the lid off of your primary fermenter?

I have arthritis and can't fight with the lids anymore so I use Gamma Seal Lids. They spin on and off and are easy to work with. The only problem is that you have to be sure to clean under the sealing ring real good to make sure nothing gets stuck under there. The sure make my life a lot better.
