    What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

    Very first batch. Extract kit. Forgot to add hops. Having read Papazian, figured "RDWHAB it'll turn out fine." It didn't.

    NEW - Starting out equipment

    If you're going to use carboys (I prefer buckets) then a carboy brush will save you a lot of cleanup headaches. Add a carboy bung and airlock for each carboy you have (the little things start to really add up don't they?). Then there's the question of what you're going to do with your finished...

    Hop T-Shirt

    Citrus zest for Belgian white - dried vs real fruit

    I'm gonna start doing my warm weather beers and want to do a Belgian White for SWMBO - with zest of orange, lemon and lime. I've found the prepackaged orange zest in my homebrew supply catalogs. Any thoughts on using dried zest from LBHS vs what you might find in the grocery store baking...

    Forty Bucks for five gallons of ingredients?

    This. +1 One cost saver is to give up pre-packaged kits - there's a premium charge in having the ingredients already prepared for you. Learn the recipes - there are plenty here in the forums. Just like prepared meals in the frozen food section of your grocery store vs buying ingredients...

    Beer =/= fat

    There are several problems with HFCS - the biggest being that, unlike natural sugars, it is stripped of all nutrients, fiber and other naturally occuring food parts which control/slow its rate of absorption into the body. Table sugar is no better. To use an alcohol simile, it's like taking a...
