    Bottle Bomb Concerns?

Thinking more about it, I added the priming solution to the empty bottling bucket and filled the bucket to just over the 4 gallon mark...so like 4.25 gallons of which was primed with 5 oz of sugar. I did dry hop in primary and there was a lot of junk in the bottom of the fermenter that I...

    Bottle Bomb Concerns?

I did take a reading on day 15 and it was at 1.011 and on day 22 it was the same...so it was done fermenting. As for the sugar, I emptied the 5OZ bag that came with the kit into 16oz of boiling water

    Bottle Bomb Concerns?

Hi, Just bottled my 3rd batch last night. It was a Brewers Best IPA kit and I ended up getting 28 16.9 OZ bottles...approximately 3.7gallons total. Unfortunately I lost some beer to the trub and during bottling. It sat in primary for 22 days OG was 1.061 FG was 1.011 I primed with 5oz...

NB La Petite Orange Blanche w/ Orange Zest & Coriander

Was looking at this kit recently for my next brew. Your descrpition sounds delicious. I see the kit doesnt come with a spice pack. What was your process for adding the orange and coriander?

    Best Way to Store Bottles

I pour beer into glass from bottle. Then fill empty bottle with steaming hot water from sink, leaving a little headspace and shake bottle vigourously then empty. Repeat a couple of times till clean and then store bottles upside down in empty 24 pack case. On bottling day, I blast the inside...

    What a day!

I picked up an outdoor burner (Bayou Classic SP10) at Lowes for $49 and made my last batch in the garage. Did the boil just outside the garage in the driveway and everything else (cooling, pitching etc) in the garage. I preferred it over brewing in the kitchen. More space to work with, access...

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

So this Friday will be 3 weeks since brew day and i was planning to bottle. I popped the bucket open to have a look and saw what looked like pencil shavings floating on the surface. I'm assuming this is normal and nothing to be concerned with? Here are some pics

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

My plan is to let it sit for a total of 3 weeks and then take a gravity reading then bottle assuming it's where it should be. As I only pitched the yeast late Friday night (now Wednesday) I would think it's too soon for it to be done fermenting? When I push on the top of the bucket lid the...

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

Bump. Anything to be concerned with the ambient temp being higher than the fermometer reading. At the moment, the ambient temp has been 69 but the fermometer is now reading 62. The reading was 66 a couple of days ago. Would this decrease in temp mean fermentation may have slowed down or stopped...

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

I checked on my brew again tonight..still no airlock activity which I understand is fine. Ambient temp in the room stayed at 68 but the fermometer went from 66 down to around 63. Seems odd that the temp would drop if ambient temp remained consistent. Does this sound problematic or no big deal...

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

I did readjust the airlock last night but nothing and the lid has always been sealed up tight. Hard to believe that such little movement could break a seal. I'll try again tonight when I get home but good to know that it's probably not an issue. Tough to RDWHAHB when youre at work and all...

    Second Brew - Fermentation question

Hi, Just brewed my second batch (extract) on Friday night - A Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale clone. Wort was around 60 when dry windsor yeast was pitched. Stored bucket fermenter in basement room with 68 degree ambient temp. The airlock was bubbling away on Saturday around 3PM about 14 hours...

    Brewing inside

Interesting, can you elaborate a bit more? I was thinking of setting up a fan near the stove to direct the steam outward rather than upward.

    Brewing inside

One thing to watch out for and consider with stovetop brewing is if you have an over the stove microwave oven. I found out the hard way and ended up shorting the keypad with all the steam from the boiling wort. May not be the case here but figured I'd throw it out there. My next batch will be...

    First brew...help!

Update... Ok, so after 3 full weeks of fermentation I bottled this beer on 12/12 and let them sit in a closet at 70 degrees for 2 weeks and then put a few in the fridge a few days ago. As this is my first ever brew I wasn't sure what to expect. I decided to crack one open tonight and holy...

    First brew...help!

No worries man, it was actually pretty funny...what wasnt funny though was I shorted out the microwave keypad with all the steam from the boiling wart. BUT I was fortunate enough to be able to fix it myself! Lesson to the beginners out there (myself included, be careful when boling the wart...

    First brew...help!

Thanks for all the reassurance! It was pretty funny actually, I poured half the bottle in and got to 5 gallons and stopped. I took a sip from the water bottle to finish the rest and got a mouth full of lemon....no!!! Rookie mistake. Time will tell....

    First brew...help!

Just brewed my first batch tonight...Northern Brewers American Wheat ale. Everything went as planned until just prior to fermentation. Wort was added to cold water in the fermenter and to top off the fermenter I grabbed 2 16 oz bottles of Poland springs water out of my fridge. Halfway thru...
