    Simple 120V RIMS build

Can you think of any reason why it would be bad to have my element and pump plugged into a GFCI on my control panel, and have my control panel hooked into a GFCI circuit (breaker) as Lbussy suggested?

    Simple 120V RIMS build

Thanks fbold1 and Osedax! I'll just go ahead and just make everything 20A like you said, 93% is definitely pushing it. The gangbox is made entirely of steel. If I see that it doesn't make sufficient contact with the RIMS tube, I'll just connect the two. I have experience wiring, and...

    AG Mashing question

BlackGoat, his strike water amounts include the MT dead space. If you use 5.8gal of strike water, my guess is your first runnings will have a volume of about 3.8-4gal. John Palmer (and I believe BeerSmith) says grain absorption is in the range of 0.1gal/lb grain. this would mean 1.6gal for your...

    Simple 120V RIMS build

Is anyone able to offer me some guidance on these last concerns? Once they've all been answered I'm immediately purchasing all of the parts :rockin:

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Emjay, with the smaller stir bar, it works perfectly! On the lowest setting, I get a full vortex that periodically smashes into the stir bar and disperses the air throughout. This seems a little aggressive for the lowest setting (the highest setting is madness!). Is there any reason to make an...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for breaking everything down. I'll try the smaller stir bar, adding my second HD magnet, and getting it as close to the top as possible.

    Simple 120V RIMS build

Hey everyone, As some people have noticed, I have been that annoying person on the forum asking a billion questions. However, there is a plus side to this! So far I have a complete spreadsheet in excel, outlined each part individually, the link to the seller websites, quantities, prices, and...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Thanks, it is a 2" bar in a 2L flask. It's one of the cylindrical bars that have a thin strip in the middle with a slightly larger diameter of the cylinder. If the 1" bar doesn't work I'm going to try the oval bars.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I just wired everything up. I'm using a 12V supply with my 12V fan. Even at the highest resistance from the potentiometer, my bar still gets thrown. What's weird is that when there's nothing in the flask, it spins fine. When water is in, it throws? I lowered the fan as far as I can, but it's...

    help w/ ideas on my 1st e-brew

If you run (2) 120V 1500W elements, and used a 110V chugger pump, you can run this all on a 30A circuit. Otherwise, you can get an electrician to come in and install whatever circuit you need.

    SSR size

If you go with 2 elements, you need the 40A SSR FYI

    My new RIMS control panel

That makes a lot more sense. I'm going to be using 20A toggle switches, which means I don't need the first contractor. I'm going to include the second one for safety, as Kal (and you) said, SSR fails in the 'on' position while a contact or fails in the 'off' position. Thanks for your help...

    My new RIMS control panel

Cool, I wasn't exactly sure! Just a few last questions. Why do you have a contactor after your main power switch? I brought this up with Kal, and he (I think) agreed that if everything is on a 120V circuit, you can use a switch that can handle the 15-20A without the use of a contactor...

    SSR size

Well make sure you have a 40A circuit in your control box, or be ready to pay a couple hundred for an electrician to install it. If you threw in (2) 1500W elements you could probably run this on a 30A circuit-something to consider. If you're brewing 10gal you'll probably need the two elements...

    SSR size

True, but the highest wattage in a 120V element is 2000W. Two of those draw 33.3A. That's well below the SSR's rating. To my knowledge, that's the highest power you can get at 120V (even two 6000W 240V element at 120V won't draw that much current). So to answer your question, that should work...

How to build a control panel (part 1)

Hey Kal, I was reading your guide, and I got a little confused. My system is going to be much different than yours, so I'm trying to figure out what is actually necessary. I understand that you use a contactor after the main power switch because this way you can use a 120V key switch to...

    RIMS and Mash

Thanks for the detailed walkthrough. I like the idea of recirculating strike was to help prime and reach SP. Is there any reason you don't pump the water into your MT? Cheers!

    RIMS build preparations and concerns

Thanks for the reply! I was having trouble getting someone to help me out. About the wire gauge... I might as well just use 14 gauge power cords and connect everything inside my control panel with 14 gauge, just to make sure I don't accidentally send 16 gauge in a place it shouldn't be! I'm...
