Dank Side of the Moon IPA

Ok, so first: don't hate on the extract brew. My "moon series" is almost complete and every one has been extract so I won't stray away from it. steeping grains are a big ol secret in amount, length of time, and varying types (sorry) 1 lb golden light DME 14.2 g Southern Star at hot break (30...

    New hop varieties

Update on Petoskey -- My field grade plant from GLH is now nearly 10 feet tall. 3 feet of growth over the weekend. It is sending off 2-4 foot bines nearly daily. It is a beast of a plant already and I am really looking forward to the possibility of a decent cone harvest just in year one. (my...

    New hop varieties

damn man. I haven't had any wildlife remotely interested in mine, and I live in the middle of nowhere in wildlife central. A good shotgun can end your woes, if you are far enough away to safely handle it. Question: My one plant had its top broken off on the first bine, and now that end is...

    New hop varieties

I planted 13, 11 rhizomes from various providers and 2 field grade plants from GLH. 1 field grade plant is at 7 feet, the other is a fuggle that is just now reaching the coir but has been a ground dweller and wrapped all around itself. 2 Crystal rhizomes that are now about 6ish feet tall and...

    New hop varieties

My year one Petoskey is now creeping on 7 ft tall and starting to really bush. Low mast on main bines, but I am assuming it is just indicative of age and root size. I am working to develop this in the future, so I want year one to be a huge success for root development. I have between 7-10...

    Gooseberry Pie Beer Recipe

Revitalizing an old post: I am in the process of developing a recipe for a Gooseberry Sour IPA, will be called Tart and Goosey and use Petoskey hops from the plants I am, currently growing.

    New hop varieties

I ordered one Petoskey field grade plant. Arrived approximately 10 inches tall from top of soil, two bines with plenty of slightly developed leaves. Put into the ground yesterday in Eastern WV. I exposed some of the root and applied Mycorrhizal inoculant directly on the root, and placed some in...

    New hop varieties

Can I store them in the fridge or plant them in pots to keep in the house and transplant in a few months? Your plant will come with rice hulls in the bag, GLH growers recommend adding half a pound or so of moist potting soil and mixing with the rice hulls. Put some holes in the bag, and store...

    New hop varieties

I just purchased 3 Petoskey field grade plants last week. I'm pretty excited for this one honestly. I've only ever grown from rhizome...but the stats and the "pungent pineapple" aroma are going to be magical in my fruited IPAs...most notably my mango. If the pineapple comes through like one of...

2nd Year hops starting to put off shoots...what do I do now?

"I never trim back the crown - don't see the point. " If you plan on having good AA and lupulin production, trimming your crown is essential every few years. Similarly, if you are growing multiple plants in a row, the suggested 3 foot spacing will be overcome in 2.5-3 years and you will never...

    Barrel age info

Thanks for the advice. I got with the distillery and of course they have never made beer so they couldn't be of much help other than prepping. Filled with water to rehydrate, drained the water and am storing it for coffee brewing (amazing bourbon barrel coffee 10/10 do recommend doing this)...

    Post your infection

You see, you again are making assumptions. My pellicle was self-induced but my I should have force carbonated instead of bottle conditioned. Did I ever once say it was an accidental infection? I simply said pellicle. Whatever the case may be, I learned one thing, and 5-6 liters is not...

Every single manufacturer of sours sells contaminated beer??? I don’t set the prices, demand does brother, and QA? Why are we still arguing about this

    Post your infection

Or patronize for that matter? Brew a small batch and by the time you open a bottle to test every 3 days...you have no product...especially when your small batches sell for 12-18 dollars a bottle locally. It’s just a risk you don’t take when your specialty small batches only put out a case...

    Post your infection

Don’t want to argue, but here’s the deal, you are assuming things. My system is full turn-key from water addition to bottling. My gravity readings don’t use a hydrometer, they use a density meter and spectrometer with a resolution of 0.0001 g/cm^3 As far as keeping an eye on bottles goes, well...

    Post your infection

I vehemently disagree. I bottled a pecan pie stout that had pellicle, SG was completely stable for 2.5 weeks, bottle conditioned and though I didn’t make bottle bombs per se, that drastically over carbonated and made the beer undrinkable
