    growing hops in VA?

Unfortunately didn’t find much that wasn’t already covered here. Went with Nugget, Williamette, and Crystal. Great Lakes Hops has an interactive map on their website and you can look up hop farms that have registered on there and what they are growing. Lots of stuff that’s been brought up here...

What I did for beer today

Brewed my first all grain batch!

    Kitchen stovetop induction BIAB

Finally got a chance to brew. Went smoothly and was only .004 off on pre boil and OG, and I will definitely take that. Mash process was really no big deal. Biggest issue I encountered today was my wort was not as cool as I thought it was. Likely combo of temp probe being in contact with...

    Wlp644 and Brett Claussenii(Wlp645)

I have each of these on hand and am thinking about co pitching them in a pils/wheat 1.050 ish sour beer. I’ve used 644 but never 645, descriptions seem to have some overlap. Anyone try this, or have experience with both? Searched around a bit and haven’t found anything.

@IslandLizard Thanks, I’m working with well water so no chlorine. We had it tested not too long ago, actually posted the results here in below linked thread. Had an issue with a strange off flavor in two of my beers which I think was water interacting with extract related. I’ve downloaded...

Thanks everyone for their input! Thought I’d do an update just for anyone reading this thread in the future with same question I had. Went with eight gal Megapot, and actually realized I had a cooler sitting unused in my shed, so converted that. The megapot fits perfectly on my burner, but...

    Quick Berliner Weisse

I really recommend checking out the pinned post here about modern souring methods. You can get beers like this in normal timeframe for clean beers.

That all makes sense, thanks guys!

    Fast Souring - Modern Methods

I think I may know the answer already, but I’ll ask just in case. For a fast and funky beer(Brett and Sac co pitched), I have previously made two separate starters of each. Generally Brett roughly a week out and then Sac a couple of days. I’ve only one stir plate at the moment so I have...

What came in the mail for you today?

8 gal mega pot, hardware to convert my cooler to mash tun, some hi temp tubing, and a refractometer. Once my wort chiller is here I will be ready for all grain!

    growing hops in VA?

@CascadesBrewer those are some good points. I’m a little outside NOVA and for us we can start warming up in March and seem with frosts, then maybe get one or two right around Mother’s Day. Did that in 2020 and really hurt the orchards and wineries. Great Lakes hops looks like they have a couple...

All Grain Oatmeal Stout Brew Day Commencing!!!

Nice! I just made the equipment jump to AG. Once it’s setup I’ll order a kit to start, oatmeal stout is on the short list.

    growing hops in VA?

Alright let’s work some necromancy. I know a lot of the folks in this thread haven’t been seen in a while, but is there anyone with recent experience? There are a few varieties that are mentioned regularly throughout this thread, so I would say there is a decent baseline established. However...

I played around with the biab .com calculator and per that at least a 10gal kettle is good into the low 20lbs for grain bills, not sure if I’m doing something incorrectly though. Definitely a possibility since the only variable I’m changing is grains. Honestly though after talking through it...

I’ll take a look. Main reason I was looking at NB is they have a small sale going and I can get a wort chiller on sale too

    Kitchen stovetop induction BIAB

That is the exact pot I’m looking at, trying to figure out the weight difference between it and the 8 gal version don’t think bird be that much

This was pretty much exactly what I was considering for the second option. The back door is right by the kitchen, which goes down some stairs. Could make use of that elevation change to help with transfers. And if I put the cooler on Dooley could just wheel it right over. This may well be what I...
