    First BIAB 3 gallon batch

Likely the water and the wort was not mixed thoroughly, and you got a sample that was higher than the true og. For future reference, you should always take a gravity sample before diluting with water as it's very hard to mix evenly. Then you can just use a dilution/blending tool or do the math...

Help with low efficiency with BIAB

    It would be the weighted average. 10 lbs at 85% + 2 lbs at 70% = ( 10*.85 + 2 * .7 ) / 12 = 82.5%

Help with low efficiency with BIAB

Sounds like you're getting conversion and mash efficiency mixed up. You should be hitting 90-95% conversion, unless you have significant pH issues, and 70-80% mash.

Brew house efficiency for an imperial stout

Depends a lot on your process, and grain bill amounts. Use my calculator, below, and first set it up for an average brew day for you. Then increase the grain bill and you should see the lauter, mash, and brewhouse efficiencies decrease in turn...

    12 Quart BIAB Pot Recommendations

Haven't tested it, and it is also very dependent on the induction properties of the pot, and how wide the pot is. Like I said above, the duxtorp 1800w burner I am able to maintain a low boil in my 9 gallon kettle although getting it there takes awhile. YMMV.

    12 Quart BIAB Pot Recommendations

I have experience with two different models from duxtorp/secura, 8100 and 9100 models. The TILLREDA burner from IKEA, manufactured by INTERTEK (a company in UK, which has factories in China AFAIK) is a fairly new product in the us (8/1/2017 sales start date). It's covered under the standard...

    12 Quart BIAB Pot Recommendations

Can't find the exact pot but there are several "mainstay" brand on walmart that are $10-25. The one I'm thinking of was $12 12 qt stainless pot with lid, and was reported to be induction compatible. What I would probably do is head to your local walmart, verify the return policy on these...

Calc for non-boiling water in stepped mash?

As far as I'm aware, there is no prebuilt calculator to do this currently. The formula above is correct however it's probably more involved then most brewers can deal with, and the conversion for gallons of water to kg of water is only true at room temp. I'm not sure of the heat capacity of...

    Fly Sparging question

IMO Nothing. There is the argument that it makes lautering faster/easier. I'm not sold on it though, as I have not seen data to support this theory. We know that viscosity of sugar solutions do not increase to a substantial amount, however beta glucans and proteins may become denatured and...

Or go back in and just edit the recipe?

Looking for brewing software or app suggestions

They got a new developer a short while ago, so the main recipe calculator is rather different from what it was a year or so ago, but the same general "feel".

Scaling recipe in Beersmith - confused

Even worse, they may have had 85% brewhouse efficiency, and large mashtun losses, but before publishing they "standardized" their recipe to the standard 70% mash efficiency. But who knows how they scaled their recipe before publishing.

Survey: what software (or not) do you use?

Obviously skewed perspective, but I filled it out. Before embarking on your own software, I would consider joining one of the current groups of devs. Brewtarget being the largest open source group. I'm also working on a new bootstrap 1 page webapp (which will be downloadable as well), which...

    Calculate temp change over time?

Not enough information. Vessel geometry matters (surface area), is it open? If so, what's the surface area of the exposed surface? Is there wind or any airflow? Is it 5.5 gallons of wort, water, mercury?

1 cup of sugar=.??? SG per gal

The 0.625 liters per KG of sugar is not always true, it's a non linear volume contribution. I can post the actual formula later if you really want it.

    Getting Frustrated with Beersmith

It makes sense that mash eff will be higher than brewhouse, but I don't think the way it's doing so is good practice.
  18. P

    Getting Frustrated with Beersmith

Looks like you're correct, since beersmith works from user input on a fixed brewhouse efficiency, changes to mashtun or kettle losses do not change boil gravities correctly. Mashtun losses don't appear to change any gravity or efficiency estimate. Increasing kettle losses (trub and chiller)...

    Getting Frustrated with Beersmith

I'll have to double check the relationship between mash efficiency and kettle losses in beersmith. Sounds like a bug though, as it's mashtun losses that should impact mash Efff, not kettle. Boil gravity may not be changing since it calculates it backwards based on user input BH eff. It should...

    Getting Frustrated with Beersmith

Glad to hear it! I would also record conversion, lauter, mash, and brewhouse efficiency. But I'm probably an outlier. I record a lot of things on brewday I would probably get looks if I brought a brewsheet to a club meeting... Correct. Beersmith NEVER adjusts the BH efficiency. It...
