Rule of thumb for grain absorption?

I have an 8 gallon brew kettle. I also happen to be interested in BIAB. So I'm trying to figure out what is practical for my current setup. According to BIABCalc, I could strike 10lb of grain into ~6.7gal of water. Once I mash and pull the bag, drain and squeeze, what kind of volume should I...

    Boom! 1L Flip Top Explosion

I opened the third bottle last and I'm happy to report it was absolutely delicious! It was perfecty carbed, not a volcano. So, TNGabe, I am thinking you nailed it. I soaked all of my other bottles in oxyclean in advance of bottling day. At the last minute, I decided to use the 1L...

I'm going to pop open the third one this evening. I'll report back with what I find.

    Boom! 1L Flip Top Explosion

I washed the bottles with soap and hot water. I used a vinator with about 5-6 pumps to cover the inside. I used brand new gaskets which were submerged in star san for 5-10minutes. I used a spray bottle to liberally coat the tops before I put on the gasket and then gave the neck a spray before...

    Boom! 1L Flip Top Explosion

I should start with the disclaimer that this is my very first batch of homebrew. Last night I had two 1L flip bottles explode. The bottom of the bottles blew out. As far as I can tell, I did everything correctly so I'm trying to figure out why I had an explosion. The beer is american pale...

    Willamette/Fuggles substitution for stout

Thanks for the response. I think I'll try the Tettnang. This is just my second brew, so I'm trying to balance tried and tested recipes vs experimentation. In your opinion, would you recommend pairing the nugget with the tettnang or stick with the original plan for northern brewer?

    Willamette/Fuggles substitution for stout

I actually do have some Nugget hops that I could use in lieu of Northern Brewer. Unfortunately, they didn't have glacier either. This is what I have on hand. Northern Brewer (9.4%) UK Target (7.5%) German Tettnang (3.5%) Nugget (14.3%) Summit (17.6%) (I'm thinking this in not appropriate)

    Willamette/Fuggles substitution for stout

I am going to be brewing a stout this weekend. I used Papazian's Toad Spit Stout as a starting point for my recipe. He calls for Northern Brewer as the bittering hop. For finishing, he recommends Willamette or Fuggles. My LHBS didn't have either of those two. I found several hop...
