    St. Louis Brewers Festival

Just received a copy of the site map. Might prove useful... MAP

After reading, and following instructions to a tee, still only 57% efficiency

I recently resolved some efficiency issues with a few easy fixes: 1) Getting a better thermometer - and testing it to make sure it's accurate. I had been using the one that came with my turkey fryer. It has an analog dial which is too imprecise for brewing. You couldn't be certain if you...

    St. Louis Brewers Festival

I'm trying to keep my Friday work schedule light so I can play hooky in the afternoon and walk across the park to the festival. Weather permitting... I'm a tent captain on Saturday afternoon, then probably hanging around the STLBrews demo tent for the evening. Last year was fun, but...

Which brewery is more solid than Sierra Nevada?

I'm surprised to have only seen a couple mentions of Bell's. I'm not a fan of all the styles they make, but every offering I've sampled has been well crafted. Not a clunker in the bunch as far as my tastes go. Are there better versions of any particular style from another brewery? Sure, but...

break the news before the press

I was about 60 miles west of the epicenter and slept through it.

    What to do in St.Louis??

I was so disappointed to try what passes for pizza when I moved here. Provel cheese? Do St. Louisans really believe that every other pizza making society throughout history got it wrong by using mozzarella? I don't get out for pizza much since I haven't found a good spot. Racanelli's is...

    Best stupid-comedies of all time...

Glad someone else is a fan. Probably the most under-appreciated stupid comedy of all time - and arguably Val Kilmer's finest role :p Did anyone mention: Dodgeball PCU Talladega Nights

    What to do in St.Louis??

I moved to the St. Louis area about 7 years ago. I'm still discovering new things, and haven't checked out all the city has to offer since I live 20 miles out in the boonies, but I'll chime in with a bunch of advice/links for you: Here's a variation on a link posted earlier. It shows all...

I finally broke down and bought a dremel...

We use a Dremel to trim our dogs' nails. A sanding bit will grind them down very effectively.

How many are brewing extra hoppy beers?

Some folks love malty beers, some enjoy a crisp lager. I say bring on the bitter! My Pliny clone has 25oz of hops per 10 gallons :rockin:

What do you think of Boulevard Brewing company

Exactly. The Bully Porter is the only one of their beers that I'd be psyched to drink. The rest are just OK.

Any body ever tried Flatbranch Brewing in Missouri?

I haven't lived there for 20 years, but my family is still in Columbia, MO. I go back for a visit every couple months or so and always try to incorporate a stop at Flat Branch. Their food is quite good, but tables and the patio can fill up fast. I usually just bring an empty growler to fill...

    Poshwieser?

I had posted above saying this beer wasn't bad. I tasted a 3oz sample at a friend's house, several beers into a brewing day. I think my judgment may have been clouded :drunk: This evening I opened one of the bottles I had purchased for $5. When the top popped I immediately got that...

    Hoppiest Beer Out There

Here's our take on Pliny The Elder. A buddy and I split a 10 gallon batch. I just added the final dry hop about 15 minutes ago. I'll bottle it next week, and enjoy throughout the summer and fall... if it lasts that long. The samples I've had have been mind blowing! Pliny the Clone...

    Flip top problems

It certainly could be the bottles/lids/seals, but could it also be that the priming sugar isn't getting mixed well throughout the entire batch? You want to avoid stirring your primary as it'll kick the sediment up into solution, and possibly cause oxidation. Not sure how you're adding it...

    Oat malt and/or Quick oats?

Here's the recipe I ended up with: 9lbs 2-row 2.5lbs oat malt 1lb. Crystal .75 lb Chocolate Malt .5 lb Roasted Barley My mash settled in at 152°. I had wanted it a few degrees higher, but just let it ride there for about 50 minutes before pulling first runnings. I ended up doing a...

    Oat malt and/or Quick oats?

Thanks for the responses so far! I just grabbed the Oat Malt out of the grain locker and here's what the label says: Thomas Fawcett & Sons LTD. Castleford, England Oat Malt 1.9-2.3°L TF&S's website says: "Enhances body and flavour of Stouts, Porters and Winter Warmers" I...

    Oat malt and/or Quick oats?

I'm going to brew an oatmeal stout tomorrow. The recipe I have used in the past calls for a pound of quick oats. I have the quick oats on hand, but I also have five pounds of oat malt I picked up a couple months ago. Should oat malt be considered more of a base grain than an adjunct? If I...

I'm looking to make a Rye IPA

I was trying to make a Rye Imperial IPA along the lines of Bittersweet Lenny's. Unfortunately I ended up with horrendous efficiency so the end result is a nice non-imperial Rye IPA. Here was the recipe I followed for a 5 gallon batch: It is very tasty! IIRC, I used one ounce of each for...

Looking for a place to stay near St. Louis, Chesterfield area

Welcome to the neighborhood! You need to post this request on the STLbrews forum. Our homebrew club meets the 1st Thursday of each month... except we had to rearrange a couple dates recently. Check the website for info. Good luck finding a spare room - wish I had one to offer... You...
