The quest for efficiency: A survey

Since I'm new to AG brewing it's a personal challenge. Once I really get to know my equipment it will be more about capability of repeating batches.

    all grain brewing help

I personally don't know anyone that uses specialty malt for more than %20 of the grain bill. I'm not saying you shouldn't but as a novice I would say it should be around %10 of the grain bill. Are you using brewtarget or beersmith to help create your recipes?

Muscle cramps after drinking a few brews?

As others have mentioned drink more water. I also keep a gatorade or 2 in the fridge just in case water alone isn't enough :mug:

    Beersmith efficiency question.

Same here, my buddy would slowly pour in the grain while I stirred and once all the grains were in we would both stir but after that I wouldn't stir again. I stir it a few times during the mash now and also at the end of the mash. I double batch sparge and stir once the water is added and also...

    Beersmith efficiency question.

I started milling my own grain with just a cheap corona mill and also stirring my mash a few times during the 1 hour mash time and my efficiency went from 60's to %80-90.

Why do some of my bottled beer have chill haze?

I'll have to check and see if it clears as they warm. I have the bottles in my basement where they stay around 70F. I put them in the fridge a day or 2 before drinking them. I use irish moss tablets when I brew and also use gelatin finings in my secondary.

Why do some of my bottled beer have chill haze?

Hey guys, I recently brewed an all grain batch using BIAB method and some of my bottled beer has chill haze. Some bottles pour a clear golden color and some pour a darker opaque color. If you hold it up to a light you can see little floating things in it. Shouldn't all the bottles have chill...

Does anyone use a BIAB style bag in their mash tun?

It keeps the temperature way better than my kettle can. I also do a double batch sparge and get really great efficiency this way.

Does anyone use a BIAB style bag in their mash tun?

Good to know there shouldn't be any downsides to using a grain bag in the mash tun. I just found it odd that after all the reading on AG brewing I've done in the past month or two (several books, countless internet articles) I never once came across this method.

    Headless Horseman Pumpkin Ale

What are you using to crush your grains?
  14. G

High gravity at end of sparge and always too-low OG

That could be. Sadly the only way for me to test this would be to buy my grain from my LHBS and crush it there. I purchased a bunch of bulk grain and my cost per 5gal brew would almost double if I tried that. I guess I could brew the same recipe I brewed a week ago and not stir the mash. I...

Does anyone use a BIAB style bag in their mash tun?

Exactly, the only time I had slowdown was when I did a pumpkin ale that had 2.5kg of pumpkin in the mash. Whenever it would slow down I'd lift the bag a bit and move it up and down. Other than the pumpkin ale I've never had any slowdowns during run off with this method. I also have a bazooka...

Does anyone use a BIAB style bag in their mash tun?

Hey guys, I'm always reading about stuck mashes and grain pieces going into the brew kettle so I was wondering if people use a nylon bag inside their mash tun to prevent this from happening. I started doing this a few batches ago and now don't need to vorlauf and never have issues with stuck...

    Headless Horseman Pumpkin Ale

This might be a silly question but did you mill your grains? 1.02 is really low. I believe that 11lb grains in a 5gal batch should have an SG around 1.04 and an OG around 1.05. What did you use to take the reading and what temperature was the wort? Was 1.02 pre-boil (SG) or post boil (OG)?

High gravity at end of sparge and always too-low OG

I to was haviong terrible efficiency when I started AG brewing and managed to go from %60 efficiency up to%85-90. I never used to stir my mash during the 60min and now I stir it every 15min for about 1min. I mix again before vorlauf and then drain into the brew kettle. I add my sparge water...

Where to buy 10 Gallon Cooler for use as Mash Tun

Hey guys, in Canada I can only find 5 gallon cylinder shaped coolers. My buddy is in Gradn forks and said he'd pick one up for me if he can find one. Any clue where he should look? This is the style I'm looking for. Thanks
