    Ooooh, that smell

I doubt its chlorine as it breaks down with heat quickly, since you're doing an all grain batch you have water over 160 then mixed with the grain for 150+ or so for an hour then you boil it for an hour. I'm not sure about the "band aid" smell but fermenting wort usually doesn't smell good and...

    (part # A-294) 3/8 barb x 3/8 MIP safe? Contains greater than .25% lead!

Don't do it, I've heard you can oxidize it but is it really worth getting lead poisoning? I will only use something that was made for supply lines (water coming into your house for drinking).

    Help ballparking my alcohol content

scotched your yeast will keep eating until all the sugar is gone or they die because they can't tolerate the alcohol in your must (other things can stop them like a low temp but that's only temporary). US-05 is an ale yeast and wasn't breed to tolerate high alcohol so odds are they won't make...

Brew Dog, I think they make better beer.

One time I cooled my wort and put it in the bucket turned around to grab my yeast put in in suspension turned back and my rottweiler had his head in the bucket drinking my wort!!! Good things dogs mouths are cleaner than peoples (who hasn't started a siphon with there mouth when you first...

    Storing beer in a keg

Or you could boil up a cup of corn sugar and throw it in the keg while your racking it then put about 15 lbs of pressure on it. That way you it will carb up naturally, that's what I do.

    The Gift of Yeast?

The worst thing that could happen would be you get a touch of diarrhea the next morning. It happened to me when I first started brewing after my system got used to the live yeast it wasn't a problem. Like Metzo said just pour it gently and leave about 1/4 of an inch in the bottle and you'll be...

Sparkling cider in keg w/o force carbing.

I usually naturally carb in kegs as well but use c02 to keep the pressure up. The first few glasses will be cloudy (unless you cut your dip tub) and have a lot of foam. It will work for a while but as you lose pressure your cider will go flat and I don't think there is enough pressure to get it...

    Evaporation loss question

I'm not even sure the cold caused it, it could have been low humidity that night or I had my burner up way to high or something else... I have no idea what caused me to loose so much to evaporation that night.I knew it wasn't normal... but I'll be damned if I can figure out what happened. I...

    Evaporation loss question

I've had something similar happen, it was real cold that night and was doing my final boil outside. Started with 6.5 gallons thinking I would lose a gallon in a hour ended up losing 2.5 gallons. Still made good beer though even though it was pretty strong, good thing it was an IPA.

main breaker box - relationship of main breaker to others

the breakers must match the wires that come off it. If you have 14 gauge wires you don't want to put a 30 amp breaker, the breaker is supposed to be the "weakest link".

    what are your beers named?

I normally don't name beers but a friend of mine asked me a few weeks ago if I had ever heard of a fuggle (he had been at some beer tasting or micro brew and was amazed by the word). I said yea... its a variety of hops... A few weeks later I'm asking a few people in the office what I should...

    Baking yeast in a pinch?

I used baking yeast twice both for ciders. The first one came out great nice apple flavors, very good. The second came out real tart and had no apple flavor and a bit of a bread after taste (very slight). I know this isn't very scientific but both were made from the same store bough juice...

My LHBS is run by a woman and I've asked her for advice a few times, and she was always dead on. I signed up here just for that.
