Heck of a time with bulk grain.

I want to start buying bulk grain, but I am having a hard time finding any for a reasonable price. I understand that shipping is costly for internet providers. Midwest or AHS have the best going rates for bulk with shipping. The local places are charging a sh** ton for the stuff. I can get...

    IPA w/ a bit o rye....how does this look?

Oh another thing if you fly sparge you might add just a handful of rice hulls. I don't think you will need them for 1 - 2 lbs. It's not like you're making a Roggenbier, but they never hurt. If you batch sparge, no need at all.

    IPA w/ a bit o rye....how does this look?

Absolutly not. Rye is a great and complimentary grain for most pale ale styles. 60L Can stand its own in there and the rye is just going to build complexity on top of the 2-row. I think since you are using malted rye a little bump would be good. It is more mild and subtle than raw or flaked...

    IPA w/ a bit o rye....how does this look?

That looks good. The Simcoe @ 15 should be a real compliment to the rye in this beer. I did an IPA with some rye in it a while ago. The malted rye has a milder flavor than the flaked rye, so you might want to bump that up to 2# and drop a pound of pale. I mashed @ 154F also. I used 1# 40L...

What books do you guys recommend?

Ray Daniels - Designing Great Beers; Is about the basics of recipe balance. Randy Mosher - Radical Brewing; Is about historical and odd recipe design. The Belgian Ale books are informative, if you are into that sort. Brew Like a Monk, Wild Ales, Farmhouse Ales

Yet another all grain first time- Biermuncher's Black Pearl Porter

It gets easier. I can do it damn near in my sleep with swine flu now. :drunk: My AG days are down to about 5 hours of actual work. I have learned to start with the mash, and do all the cleaning and other task during mash and boil down time.

    Help pick me some hops!

Yeah, I was really leaning towards Styrian, or East Kent, but German Tradition is a great one also. I have never done a bulk hop buy before. I really thought knew what I wanted, until I saw them in the cart. Then I said, but, but... I want them all.

    Critique my recipe

Honey malt likes to be mashed, but it seems like every time I try to find a definitive answer to that one I find conflicting answers. It looks good, but more continental inspired. You might consider replacing the hop bill with something American, maybe citrus and spicy for a refreshing light ale.
