    Beer In Alaska

Midnight Sun was my favorite brewery in Anchorage. Cynosure was very good when we were there but it has been 5 years already.

    Help - 3-Piece Ball Valve Gasket/Ring

I've got one valve like that. If something happens to it, I guess I'll just but a new valve.

    Something I hadn't thought of

While I'm sure there are small differences between brands of malt, I very much doubt that it would make more than a point difference.

Calling all those in the NHC Today

I f you think Pilsner is bad, look at the Belgian Ale Category. They throw clone beers in with all the light Belgian beers. The year I judged that category at NHC finals, one of the clone beers was a clone of Ommegang Three Philosophers. That was the beer that won. Granted, it was very good...

Calling all those in the NHC Today

In 2019 Pilsner had 286 entries. BTW I took second that year!😀

What are y'all using to hold your fill hose to the kettle?

With water? I run a line from my RO system to a float valve mounted on my HLT. With wort? Just a silicone hose long enough to reach to the bottom of the BK.

Kolsch Final Runnings SG Too Low – What am I Missing?

There's going to be less sugar in the mash with less malt so you're going to see lower numbers. If you're hitting your target pre boil gravity then you're good. You may want to stop sparging earlier as a gravity of less than 1.010 can add tannins to your wort. If you don't have enough volume...

What was your first beer… ever?

My father drank Meister Brau. He'd let us have a sip, so that would have been my first beer.

    Where to find oxygen

I bought a medical tank from another homebrewer and it still had some in it. Before it ran it out, a friend who was on oxygen exchanged it for me. It will probably last me through the end of my time as a home brewer (I'm 65).

    Skimming hot break poll

I skim. I'm standing there waiting anyways for the boil to begin, so I might as well. Does it help? I don't know, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

    New Oktoberfest not flavorful

I wouldn't rely on one tasting to make a decision. Your palate could have been off that day. I've had homebrews that tasted different to on different days.

    homebrew competitions

Scoring must be higher where you are than around here. I've been a judge for over 20 years and don't see many scores in the 40's.

    homebrew competitions

I've never been involved with a competition where more than the category winner was advanced to BOS.

    homebrew competitions

I would agree. I won a silver medal at NHC in 2019 with a German Pils that scored a 38.

    homebrew competitions

You can send entries via FedEx or UPS. It is illegal to send beer via the USPS. The deadline for NHC entries has passed. It is not a competition you want to enter if you're looking for feedback.

    What is "Alt" beer

Is that .5 lb of Midnight Wheat? If so, that is too much for an Altbier.

    Kellerbier vs Helles vs Lager

The BJCP also has a sub category for Amber Kellerbier. I recently made one by mistake. Instead of buying a 10L Munich Malt, I bought Gambrinus' 30L Munich Malt. I couldn't figure out why it was so dark until I went back to my LHBS and saw what I had bought. But it was damn tasty. I may brew...

How, and how often to clean mill?

I never even thought about cleaning my mill, other than getting out the grain dust that accumulates in the bottom of my cabinet. My mill has to be 25 years old at least.
