    carbonating with nitrogen

The gas used for dry stouts and such is called draft blend and is 75% N2 and 25% CO2. When I keg my Murphy's Clone I just put it under ~44psi for a couple of weeks and it carbonates fine. You will need a stout faucet with a flow restrictor otherwise at those pressures the beer will go all over...

What do you do with your used grains?

Oh yeah.. first time my lab ate the better part of the 13 lbs. She was cleaning out both ends for 2 days.

What do you do with your used grains?

I just put the stuff right into the garden beds.. tilled in and planted my tomatoes. Result: Little Shop of Horrors! 8 foot vines with tons of fruit!

moths in grain & wheat beer gone bad

The freezer in the old refrigerator I turned into a 6 tap kegerator has room for 2 five gallon buckets (after removing the ice maker). 2 buckets holds about 48 lbs of grain. Won't kill weevils or larvae but should slow the growth rate way down...just got to remember to take grain temp into...

    High Efficiencies...

I had a test done this spring and the ph was neutral. Don't have the test results here but I think it was 7.2 maybe?

    High Efficiencies...

My water is from a well; good chemistry but a little hard. I've checked the mash ph and it is 5.5 each time. Starch test at the end of the sacch rest shows complete conversion...

    High Efficiencies...

OK. I've done half a dozen AG's so far and my efficiencies have all been from 83% to 97%. I've been reading all of the posts from folks having troubles with low eff and I am just a wee bit curious as to what I am doing different - maybe some of you who have been doing this for some time can...

    All time cheapest ingredients

By the time you factor in your time it becomes obvious you will not be able to undercut BMC on the cost/bottle. However if you enjoy well crafted beer you can make beer as good or better than any micro you've ever had for much less than you can get it at the market. Brewing is a craft. It...

    Help with Roggenweizen Recipe?

Has anyone tried juniper berries with the rye? I've been thinking of doing one along the lines of OP's grain bill but using .5-1.0 oz of dried berries in the boil...

First AG- mash & Boil volume vs hop boil

I do a single batch sparge and have eff's in the high 80's to low 90's. I also end up collecting about 8 gal of wort to boil. Since I know with my pot I boil off 1.5 gal/hr I plan my boil time to end up with the proper OG for the recipe. I could adjust the brewhouse efficiency in my...

    Decoction Mash Video

Ich wollte nur sagen, danke schön für die ausgezeichnete Video! I have been wanting to make a classic Bamburg rauchbier for some time and the best recipe I found called for a double decoction. I read the steps in Palmer several times but watching you doing it made it crystal clear. And the...

I have a question about the washers on a 5 gal MLT..

Any boatyard or marina or a hardware store near water will (should) have all manner of SS bolts/nuts/washers...

    Yet another 1st AG...

 I ran the numbers through the calculators 5 times and holycow I got an efficiency of 82%!! Hope it's not just beginners luck. I do crush my own grain with a barley crusher. Man this is awesome!!

    Yet another 1st AG...

Just finished the sparge. Once again I outthought myself...decided to go with a water/grain ratio of 1.5/1. Ended up with 8 gal of wort!! Good thing I bought the extra bottle of gas. Hope the longer boil doesn't effect my hop utilization too much. Well, off to boil and drink...:D

    Yet another 1st AG...

Thanks for the tips. As for not getting too juiced that won't be a problem since I am behind in my brewing and don't have much left (store bought? I think not). Also, is it just me or does it seem a little weird to scroll to the bottom of this thread and see an ad for Mr Beer?

    Yet another 1st AG...

So here we go! After reading this forum for months, reading/rereading Palmer and playing with the numbers on ProMash I am doing my 1st AG in the morning; 6.5# German Wheat Malt 3.0# Weyerman Smoked Malt 1.0oz Hallertauer 60 min White Labs WLP 300 Hefeweizen w/ 1qt starter 24hr I am...

HERE WE GO! First AG. Wish me luck

Keep the posts coming! I will be doing my first AG this week...I have been collecting all the hdwr to make a MLT, got a 10gal pot and an extra bottle of gas for the burner. I have also been hanging on to every word on the forum here to try to get a feel for where the potential potholes may be...

    Carbing a keg?

Hook it up, swirl like crazy for several minutes, and then leave it hooked up. As the CO2 goes into solution you want to keep the pressure constant. After 36-48 hours you will probably be at saturation for the pressure you have selected and then you can disconnect and store/chill/age. I do...
