    First year crowns, prune?

I put in 4 crowns from GLH and the 2 larger crowns are taking off fairly quick. Once the bines start climbing a ways should I prune the bines that aren't being trained or should I let them go since this is the first year they're in the ground like I've read for rhizomes?

    First time grower.

Trying to decide if I should run 2x4s across the middle and top of my uprights with eye hooks screwed to the bottom of the top board or just eye hooks with paracord between uprights to lower the bines down once growing season is over. Any suggestions?

    2013 Hop garden photo thread

The reason I posted that is his bed looks roughly 16' long, 8 varieties would put them roughly 2' apart. My Bed is back on page 11, 24' long with 4 varieties with a 15' trellis to start with ;) I had planned on only putting 3 in but Great Lakes Hops was nice enough to throw in a 4th.

5' between different varieties and 3' between same is the general rule of thumb from everything I've read.

    Great Lakes Hops

Chinook, I ordered Magnum, Glacier and US Golding. I'll definitely order from them again when I decide to expand the garden.

A conduit bender would probably do the trick.

They look great! I ordered 3 through them and received 4, all in great condition and in the ground.

    Trimming Back

Great idea! My crowns are still small enough to get some cages over. Thanks.

Still need to run 2x4s across the middle and top but it's getting there. Going to have eye hooks on the top to tie bailing string from. So far I have magnum, glacier, US Goldings and chinook. Posts are 15' out of the ground, I know they go taller.

Garden almost ready, now what to put in it....

I looked through a bunch or recipes that I would like to brew. Came up with a general cross section of hops that they used and decided on a few varieties to start with. Happy growing!

    First time grower.

I've had my planter box for about three years, Grown veggies and herbs, last year I moved the majority of my veggies into my yard garden... Now with approval of SWMBO I'm coverting the box into a hop bed. Starting with magnum, glacier and goldings, thanks to greatlake hops I'll also be putting...

Awesome! This is going to be my first year growing as well. I got my crowns from greatlake hops yesterday and plan on getting them into the ground today. Starting off with magnum, glacier and goldings.

How do you weigh your grain?

Add another postal scale user, works great.
