    NYS keg deposit fee

I guess I didn't realize it was the actual state charging this fee. A little search shows that not only that, but the retailer can charge a fee on top of that? The state's fee is only $75. http://www.abc.state.ny.us/system/files/Bulletin586-B.pdf

Recipe Help...F'ed up my Grain Bill!

Problem with that is all his grains are mixed. I'd go with wildwest on this one.

    NYS keg deposit fee

I'd say you're wrong they don't care about it. How many states now have laws that state scrap yards can not take empty kegs anymore? That is partly due to breweries expressing their concerns about not getting their property back. Not sure in NY is a part of that.

It to ENCOURAGE you returning the container that rightfully belongs to the brewery.

beer gun to bottle, can the bottle get warm then cold again?

No need to smack, talk dirty to, or anything else when bottling with the beer gun. Purge, Fill, Purge. There you have it. I've got bigger beers that have been aging in bottles filled this way that are well over 18 months old.

    Black IPA Help

I'll go against the grain and say DO NOT TAKE OUT THE ROAST. Just reduce it a little. For me a CDA (BIPA, IBA, etc) needs to have roast. More than the carafa will get you. This is my grain bill and this beer, to me, is tastier than the W'10 and has done very well for me in comps. 12.50 lb Pale...

    Black IPA Help

If you can, I'd actually suggest upping the Amarillo if you can. But I'm a fan of Amarillo. And that 2oz was total, which is where you are now. Maybe just up to 3 and see.

    Black IPA Help

Really? 160º? I've been using 152º with great results. But I'm starting to see more and more folks use a higher temp with this beer. Interesting. My only other comment is to maybe up the dry hops a little. I've been using 2oz for my DH, but it needs more. This style needs to have a nice in your...

    Help me read my hydrometer

Forget that the Balling or Potential APV are on there. All you want is the gravity reading. But I'm lost on what you are asking. Sounds like you are saying your OG was around 1.043? I take that from this comment: But you say your goal was 1.055. So you're about 10 - 12 points off. What was...

    Boiling outdoors... then what?

FTW. I don't even cover mine (unless I know it's going to be a while until I can transfer) while chilling. Chances are quite slim anything is going to get in there. Think of it this way...There's just as much dust, microbes, etc floating around the air in your house as there is outside. One...

My puppy had a fun half hour!

At least you didn't watch it happen and have no way of doing anything about it. When we first got our pugs I put a web cam on them a few times. One day I watched one of them to tear into their bed and had foam all over. I had to laugh and cry at the same time.

    Source for tart cherries?

Check this out: http://www.oregonfruit.com/of.pl?pg=w2 Oregon Fruit is what you'll find in a lot of LHBS's. A little cheaper when you buy it in the grocery, and it looks like they have lots of retailers in Texas.

    Condition in the keg.

I wasn't suggesting one way was better than the other. I just felt that Seven was. Personal preference.
  14. ShortSnoutBrewing

    Condition in the keg.

The theory being this...CO2 is heavier than O2 and falls to the bottom of the keg. As the beer level increases it pushes up the CO2 which in turn pushes out the O2. Limiting any contact with O2 at all. Even with Shelly's method I personally would still purge the keg first, then fill. I also hit...

    Condition in the keg.

Seven, why would you not purge the keg with CO2 first so that there is a blanket protecting your beer as you transfer? Thereby no contact with O2.

    Can I legally do this?

Let's turn the tables around for a second. Act as if you were the license holder and really enjoyed owning your own business. Then some snot nosed home brewer gives you beer to distribute in your business (I know in this case it was the business owner's idea, but go with it). Sweet Lady Jane...

    Can I legally do this?

Unlike Homercidal, I'm a little more optimistic. But the key, if you really want to know, is to call the state. You don't need to give names, locations, etc. Just pose the question. Not requiring a purchase to get the homebrew sample is going to be important. I think by charging a "cover charge"...

    too much iodophor?

If it's dry, it's not sanitized. Iodophor is a WET sanitizer. If you are letting your equipment dry you're wasting the Iodophor.

    Barley Crusher Modification

I thought all it took was a little vegetable oil from time to time. I had the issue of the roller not moving, but then oiled the sucker up...good as new.
