Purity of homebrew vs Big Corp ingredients

Hi Brew Buddies I am impressed with the lengths that HBs go to ensure proper sanitation in the home gear etc. Its simple cheap and it works. I am sure that members are equally scrupulous about what ingredients they are putting into their Wort. You know what you are doing. The same cannot be...

    Tilt readings...after calibration

Welt I got a Tilt but couldnt make it communicate with my pc nor my phone, returned to seller as faulty. I can see it being a problem for yeast with lots of krausen. Not sure if its needed other than a £30 boys toy? You may need to be skilled with IT and wifi IP address etc. Its not simple...

    Sanitising fluid practice

Thanx for the heads up, I have been reading up on this (half way through) and its much better than I expected 2017) So much of this modern pulp is up itself pushing product and semi pro gear etc and commercially biased and so on. You can spot these quickly cos they have way too many glossy pics

    Tilt readings...after calibration

strange, seems to confound the laws of physics to me - every heard of a Faraday cage and why the waves dont come thru your microwave glass door? Did you have the lid off the top of the fermenter vessel? When my tilt arrives in a few days I will test this out and revert here

    Sanitising fluid practice

You see what I mean guys - hoisted on your own petard. Your Chemsan (made in Trinidad btw) does not contains any phosphoric acid like Starsan SO ITS NOT THE SAME BUDDY. here is a print of the label @OakIslandBrewery Chemsan Chemclean ltd Trinidad and Tobago alkyl(C12 - C14)dimethyl benzyl...

    Sanitising fluid practice

There are cousins on here that have probably never been abroad let alone the UK and dont realise we dont get the same resources as you do. Starsan is not a practical proposition for us as Ive already shown and got an insulting comment in return. Not all of us homebrewers have deep pockets. It...

    Sanitising fluid practice

"we dont get Starsan in Uk" thats rediculous. "we dont get Starsan in Uk" thats rediculous. Yea I am ridiculous wash up liquid with phosphoric acid and a few drops of dish wash detergent VPW uses percarbonate only last an hour for peroxide job Chemsan seems similar to Starsan (though...

    Sanitising fluid practice

we dont get Starsan in Uk. Sodium percarbonate is whats used - it produces hydrogen peroxide when mixed with water but it only lasts active for an hour or so. Starsan reputedly uses Phosphoric acid (as used in Coke) I got some of this years ago, very useful for de-rusting and plating steel...

    Sanitising fluid practice

As I understand it from the CDC guidance there are 3 levels Definitions Cleaning removes most germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Clean with water, soap, and scrubbing. Sanitizing reduces germs to levels public health codes or regulations consider safe. Sanitizing is done with weaker...

Is this a dumb idea for cone heads?

Thing is that earlier poor experiences from 5 or more years ago have moved on since then as we became more aware of such things as BPA and O2 air spoilage etc. So I feel we should concentrate on current knowledge. PET is well known and has its advocates. Also BPA free Polypropylene is now...

    Sanitising fluid practice

Elsewhere I have seen member go to ridiculous lengths over sanitary practice - eg using RO or distilled water with a well known sanitizer product (which contains simply Phosphoric acid (a Coke additive) and a common surfactant (dish washing detergent) and selling for $$$$. I can see that rinsing...

Spin dryer to filter finished wort

Well guys we all know how tedious using filter papers etc can be, only suitable for polishing product. Trouble is that it exposes product to a lot of air for a long time. never felt comfortable with that. Product goes flat and loses aroma somehow. I havent got one of these old school spin...

Spin dryer to filter finished wort

You could try gelatin in the fermenter AFAIK you need a lot and its a slow acting product and doesnt work that well. Ive heard Chitosan and Kieselsol is best. Have got some for a test

Is this a dumb idea for cone heads?

@fluketamer No Bro you are right on message its others who invent issues with no foundation or verifiable justification but MIGHT cause a problem - naysayer IMHO Lager may be a problem cos the average product is such thin weedy fizzy water that the slightest additional flavour might stick up...

Spin dryer to filter finished wort

Its to cause the particulates to drop out quickly by centrifuge rather than/24/48hr or a cold crash at 5C

Is this a dumb idea for cone heads?

whole point is that PET bottles can be rinsed and reused and pressurised and they are a lot lighter than glass bottles. 2/3L soda bottles = brewers friend, thousands of them cant be wrong. IMHO its those marketing mongrels who dont think its cool and the punter expects a glass bottle or an...
