    Maltodextrin addition

I'm going to be brewing a very dark coffee stout soon, and was going to add some lactose as well as maltodextrin. The recipe calls for 1lb lactose and 8oz of maltodextrin. I was just wondering what, if any, negative effects there would be if I used a pound of both the lactose and...

    2nd batch done...what a nightmare!

Unfinished basement is too cold right now...and all the other rooms besides the kitchen are carpeted. So I'm SOL. Yeah, I setup a blowoff tube. Decided that my curiosity to see how powerful blowing the lid off a primary is, is super-ceded by the idea of the azz whooping I'd get to witness...

    2nd batch done...what a nightmare!

:D Probably. And I just found out the small siphon tube fits both in the grommet in pace of the airlock, or in the center of the airlock (the center stem in the airlock, hard to describe). Which way should I put it in to maximize the minimization of changing the color of my cieling? :D...

    2nd batch done...what a nightmare!

I always try to go above and beyond the norm. :D I was thinking about it....only problem is I don't have enough hose, so I'll just have to watch very carefully since the LHBS is only open weekdays...:)

    2nd batch done...what a nightmare!

Well, just brewed my second batch. First batch went perfect. :rockin: Second batch...not so much :(. First, turns out SWMBO scrubbed my primary out with some dawn and the kitchen sponge. So I posted here if it was shot. It didn't feel scratched, still smelled like beer, so I figured what the...

    scrubbing primary...

Already did that. The sponge was just a simple kitchen one, without the abrasive side. It has been used to clean pots and pans for the last few weeks though. Guess I might as well run out to the LHBS and get a new one before I start brewing this afternoon. Also, on a completely different...

    scrubbing primary...

So, I had cleaned by plastic primary out with some oxyclean and whatnot, then let it out to dry. Decided to do my second ever batch tomorrow and told SWMBO. She then told me that it smelled earlier, so she scrubbed it out with the kitchen sponge. :( So, is it ok, not ok, or possibly ok but...

    just got done bottling...priming mistake?

Sweet. Oh, I might open one or two for the superbowl, but I know I should wait another week. It's just that beginners twitch. Good. I wasn't sure what the best way to mix was. I was thinking it was fine until I realized the hose was under the surface dead in the middle, not making any...

    just got done bottling...priming mistake?

So, I just got done bottling my first brew. I primed about 4 oz in 2 cups of water and let it boil for a bit, then put half in the bucket. Then I filled about a 1/3 and put the other half in. I however did not stir the bucket (since I read here that can add oxygen), but also did not leave...

Is a secondary even needed anymore?

Actually that's a good idea. Since the headspace issue wont be as much a concern if I'm adding sugars to further ferment. My only concern would be if I did brew a big beer that needed 6 months of aging, then I'd once again be worried about headspace. Another side of the 'sitting of...

Is a secondary even needed anymore?

Correct, I am not factoring in time, as I have yet to brew a beer that would need 2-3+ months of conditioning. If and when I do, I will most likely get a carboy, but till then, I would only need a carboy to add fruit/etc. Also, as far as autolysis is concerned, I heard conflicting opinions...

Is a secondary even needed anymore?

I was reading a bunch of threads, and I had a few questions. It seems that a long set in the primary is as good as racking to a secondary, and possibly even better (less chance of contamination, worrying about introducing O2, etc). However, I'm quickly becoming addicted to this lifestyle...

Got a new brew idea...but a few questions (sweetening/changing ABV)

Stevia is also non-fermentable? I knew about splenda...but I hate the taste, so I don't think I could bear to add it to my beer. I never tried stevia so I might have to if thats the only way. Lactose, from what I understand is only good with "thicker" beers because it adds some sweetness but...

Got a new brew idea...but a few questions (sweetening/changing ABV)

So I'm thinking of doing a ale with a blueberry or maple syrup (not sure which yet) note to it. But I had a few questions: If I added either the blueberries or maple syrup to the secondary, wouldn't that increase the ABV since there's still plenty of sugar in both to ferment? How would I...

    New to brewing...temp question.

Honestly, I don't remember. It was whatever came with the Brewers Best kit. I took all the trash out, so I can't even fish it out of the garbage anymore. :D Well, I don't have a secondary fermenter, so after it's done it'll go straight to bottling. So you wouldn't change the temps again...

    New to brewing...temp question.

Hey guys, I'm new here but have been reading some threads as of late. I think his site is awesome and learned alot from it. However, I do have a few questions for my very first brew. I brewed a Brewers Best Pale Ale kit, which was relatively simple. Sanatized everything and got it all done...
