Single Vessel Brewing System Temperature Stability

Just today, I did my first batch using this approach. 1 part recirculation through the BIAB bag 1 part whirlpool under the bag. Employing a brewhardware spin cycle - of course. I did the 1-2 liters through the bag Worked very well. I am glad I made the investment in camlock fittings, valves...

    Clean Bottles

I had a bottle bomb once. Now I am a suspenders and belt bottler. After I open a bottle of beer, it gets 1/4 - 1/3 filled with tap water. Hand over the top and shake a few times. Empty the bottle. Repeat the fill and shake step. Set bottle aside. Bottles get a soak in PBW (NOT Oxyclean) and a...

On/off switch wiring to 1650 watt heating element

Looks like a good write up and good photos. For a project like this, you cannot have too much heatsink. Consider replacing the triac. After some time of abusing it with excess heat, you might have created a walking wounded device and shorted it's lifespan. It is a bit counter initiative, but...

    1 Gallon tiny partial mashes

I believe on points per dollar basis, malted barley is cheaper than LME of DME. If that us the case, I would use as much malted barley as my base malt as practical for 1 gallon batches. If some variables make DME or LME easier to add to the recipe, I would have no problem topping off my beer...

On/off switch wiring to 1650 watt heating element

Hot and solid state is a dicey combination. I do not know exactly what type of silicon device they are using in there. But if it is part of a something that sells For $17.99 retail, I know it is a pretty cheap hunk of silicon. If (probably when) it fails, it will fail in one if two ways. It...

On/off switch wiring to 1650 watt heating element

Hmmm.... Interesting device. The spec sheet says 8 amp (~960 watts) capacity, the unit has printed on it 15 amp capacity. (~1,800 watts) Is the knob a continuous rotation, as opposed to fixed steps? Does the unit get hot?

    Counterflow failure

That kind if collapse makes me think it would be from a change in pressure due to quickly changing temperatures due to quick cooling or quick heating. If it were my CFC, I would cut the length down to 25 feet. I know longer is better, but that comes with diminished returns. Most if your cooling...

Bottle: What's this and why won't it come off?

I had issues with Oxyclean, especially with extended soaking. As others have warned, it might make the situation worse. Good news is your problem is glass, so you can try all kinds of solutions. Acids, base, etc. Just make sure you are extra diligent with rinsing.

Setting grain mill gap with credit card

I knew one LHBS that was used a US dime to set his mill gap. He sword by it and used it consistently for years.

Should I brew this ancient Coopers?

Depends on how much you value your time. If you got the spare time to take risk of brewing a terrible beer, go for it.

Alternative to PBW for cleaning SS fermenters

I know people that sing the praised of Craft Meister Alkaline Brewery Wash. They claim it is superior to PBW. One of it's advantage s it works with cold water. I will let you decide if the product is over priced or not.

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

Is deionize water different from distilled water? If so, how. I assumed that deionized water & distilled water were the same (H2O - nothing else) the difference was the process that got the water to that condition.

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

My local Whole Foods has bulk water, Reverse Osmosis and De-ionizsd water. The RO has <6 ppm, de-ionized has 0 ppm. I consider them to be close enough to distilled water that I treat them as such. I contacted the company that services the machines and they confirmed my expectations. How well...

    Electrical needs for 2 BrewCommander

Sounds like the solution for how RenaudP wants to operate is two L6-30 sockets fed by two 240 VAC 30 Amp GFCI breakers. Probably he would be well served to add one or two 120 VAC on GFCI circuits for the Brewcommander pump functions as well. Much comes down to money and how much you are willing...

    Electrical needs for 2 BrewCommander

If it were me, on my boil kettle, I would not need a full blown brewcommander. All I would need on a BK is a voltage regulator on the element, something to throttle the power up and down. The power knob, I turn up and down and eyball it until I see the rolling boil level I want. A digital...

    Electrical needs for 2 BrewCommander

You can run two brewcommanders on one circuit. You have to manage and balance current draw. I am going to think that would not be difficult because I have a hard time thinking of a time when both a HLT and NK are going to both be going such to create a problem. You could create a one in, two...

Grainfather s40 to 3 prong dryer outlet.

You plug your 100 watt lamp into your 15 amp circuit breaker. I think the failure that circuit breakers protect equipment against is a short circuit. If my grainfather starts drawing 23 amps, I do not count on my 30 amp breaker to protect it. I am sure there are sections of the grainfather...
