    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

My magnums are still producing. Everything else has called it quits but my magnums just keep on going. I've got maybe another 1/2 ounce (dried) that is sooo close to ready for picking. I think the only thing that will stop mighty magnum is the first frost.

    Thanks for the link.

    Dry hopping

Has anyone ever dry hopped with whole hops? My hops garden has filled the freezer and I'd like to throw them into everything. I'm wondering about sanitation since they are probably covered by wild spores, pollen and bug poop.

    How accurate is Beersmith?

Beer Smith in my recipes both AG and extract has been dead on. That said the stock ingredients might need to be modified for what you are using. Like said earlier, the gravity of all liquid extracts is not exactly the same. --- The biggest thing I had to learn is that I was missing my...

    Free N. Brewer Hops

I've gotten 8 PM's so it's safe to assume that the hops have a new home. I will try to PM back to everyone so you know to expect (or not) a package in the mail.

    Free N. Brewer Hops

update Oct 1: Sorry, all the hops are gone. I have a friend in New York that cleaned out part of his garden. I've kept plenty for myself and I have four bags of Northern Brewer that need an immediate home. If you want free Northern Brewer hops rhizomes/root balls PM me your address...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

So, have you guys ever had autolysis? If so how long does it take to be apparent? Or is autolysis something you have to let it sit on trub for a year?

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

ScubaDan you've had too much bottom time. I recommended 2-2-2. Longer is generally better but when you are new to brewing why add an extra couple weeks to the process with minimal benefit. Step 1: 3 weeks fermenting should not hurt but it is getting close to autolysis time. I've had...

Anybody built a hop plug press?

I assume you used a hydraulic ram to press the hops. Release the pressure on the cylinder, remove the bottom of your mold/tube and then resume ramming to force the plug out. If the cylinder doesn't have enough stroke length, retract the cylinder and insert a wood or plastic plug slightly...

First year cascade in mass not ready?!

I am way down in sunny North Carolina and my bines continue to set burrs and cones even as the season draws to a close. I'm sure a good number will die on the bine at the first frost. I would not pick them early or you may end up with grassy beer. Get ready for next year. They will start...

Anybody built a hop plug press?

I've done similar things in industry and they are often done continuously. Product (hops) going in one end pushes the compressed, pelletized product out the other end similar to a sausage stuffer or meat grinder. If pushing a rod into a piece of pipe I would first try a removeable end on the...

    Keg cleaning

You could go right for the tough stuff: MEK or lacquer thinner. Try to get the solvent on any plastic or painted parts. Also do not get the thinner on your garage floor (I discovered that the thinners also disolve concrete sealer).

I need help making my kegerator!!!

I've seen some just push/pound the bottom of the freezer coil up to gain an extra inch or two. Just do not go so far as to pinch the condenser passages.

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Your Equinox Ale should be done well before three weeks if you have it in the mid 70's. All of mine have finished with room to spare in two weeks when fermented at 68f. I would ferment for 2 weeks, carbonate for 2 weeks and then let them sit in the fridge for 2 weeks. WCPA, especially if made...

sweet cider doable w only yeast

Has anyone tried adding an artificial sweetener along with priming sugar at bottling? I'm wondering if the yeast would carbonate with the sugar and the artificial sweetener provides sweetness in the finished product?

Qualitative Differences - early and late harvest

I think the key is to only pick the ripe hops. Commercial growers take a sampling across the field and then harvest everything so the under ripe, ripe and over ripe are all blended together. When harvesting by hand you can selectivley pick only the ripe ones which I think/hope gives you more...

    Rauchbier Hops Help Please

Thanks for the advice. My first Rauchbier was more mild (lighter color, less smoke) and I used 1 ounce of Pearle for 60 minutes. At bottling (it's still carbing) it tasted nicely balanced and the hop was not pronounced or noticeable which is what I want.

    Rauchbier Hops Help Please

Please help me pick hops for my second batch of Rauchbier that I will brew this weekend. Here are the malts in my recipe for a 5 gallon batch: 5 lbs beechwood smoked malt 2 lbs Munich 2 lbs German Pilsner 1 lb CaraMunich 1/2 lb Chocolate I would like to use from what I have in...

Qualitative Differences - early and late harvest

I am hoping the late crop is as good as good as during the prime season. My Cascade, Nugget and Magnum still have not stopped producing. I just pick them when they are ripe.
