Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

I so wanted one of these. I bought one and the stainless was pitted inside. The replacement had a dent in it (no apparent damage to the box) so I gave up. I was pretty disappointed...

    Prechiller effectiveness

I recently used a prechiller when I brewed a lager. I only got a few degrees lower. Next time I'll just throw it in my fermentation chamber (as I had to anyway). I figure it'll only take a little longer for the chest freezer to drop the temperature another few degrees. I'm glad I hadn't bought a...

Blichmann 15 gal vs More Beer 15 gal kettle

I got a Blichmann Boilermaker and it's hands-down the best brewing tool I have added to my collection to date. The calibrated sight glass alone is worth the price of admission to me...no need to calibrate a dip-stick. You can just tell the wort level at any time with a quick glance. It's...

    Stir Plate's to get/avoid?

I have both the Stir Starter and it's big brother, the Stir Starter 5l. Both work great.

Which is more accurate brewtoad or brewers friend?

I can't speak to Brewtoad, but I've been using Brewer's Friend for about a year with great results. I find it intuitive and really like the checklists and timers. It works great on my tablet which is an ideal device to have by my side on brew days.

    Removing Blichmann Sight Gauge

+1. The calibrated sight glass is worth the price of admission to me. It's way more convenient than having to make some sort of calibrated measuring stick. Even if I didn't use it, I think I would simply ignore it rather than put the effort into removing it. Glad you figured it out, though...

    Refractometer Question

No refractometer will give you accurate measurements once alcohol is present. It has something to do with how it bends the light. You can supposedly get reasonable results by using a calculator like this one: http://seanterrill.com/2012/01/06/refractometer-calculator/ It requires knowing your...

    Best propane burner?

I'll second the Blichmann Burner. It throws off some serious heat. The leg extensions are super nice too. Sent from my XT1060 using Home Brew mobile app

    No bubbles in my airlock?

I just kegged a rye saison. Not only did I have no bubbles, I didn't have any blowoff...I always have blowoff. I got about 91% attenuation. Just goes to show that every fermentation is different. Sent from my XT1060 using Home Brew mobile app

No fermentation after 24 hours, how to fix?

If it started, I'll bet you'll be fine. Leave it alone for a few weeks to do its thing. Sent from my XT1060 using Home Brew mobile app

    Hair in bottling bucket...

I think you'll be fine. We have four cats. Their hair is everywhere (including my beer, I'm sure). Sent from my XT1060 using Home Brew mobile app

Oh no! Airlock not bubbling, whatever shall I do?!

I just kegged a batch yesterday that didn't show any airlock activity. I also didn't get blowoff...I always get blowoff. As it turned out, I got 91.5% attenuation! Sent from my GT-N8013 using Home Brew mobile app

Pic of wort - is it bad?

I just kegged a batch of rye saison that looked similar. There was some yeast clumped up on the surface for some reason. The hydrometer sample tasted fine, so I went with it. The yeast was really powdery for whatever reason. I guess that's how the strain I used is. Sent from my GT-N8013 using...

    First Brew Pot Question

No, you don't need either. Assuming you're using an immersion chiller, try stirring during chilling. This will help chill the wort faster and encourage all of the crap to settle towards the middle of the pot. Just be sure to let it sit undisturbed for about 15 minutes after chilling and stirring...

Are these Blichmann Boilermaker cosmetic defects?

You probably won't find a perfect one. I can see the seam where it was welded on mine but not as bad as the one in your photo. It's disappointing given how expensive they are, but I don't think that Blichmann is terribly concerned about minor blemishes, unfortuantely. It kind of makes me mad...

    Belgium yeast

This isn't going to be terribly helpful, but, it depends on the yeast. Typically, a beer like Pliny would be fermented with a clean yeast so that the hop character comes through. Yeast provide a good bit of flavor contribution to the typical Belgian style. If you fermented with a Belgian...

Is there a hydrometer calibration walkthrough on the internet?

To check the zeroed reading, you'd want to use distilled water for best results. If you're looking to also test accuracy with various amounts of sugar, I'd think just knowing the appropriate offset for distilled water would be plenty accurate. Calibrating your hydrometer is a good idea. I...

    Efficiency question

They're referring to all grain brewing. In over simplified terms, the efficiency tells you how efficiently the mash converted the starch in the grain to sugar. There are different efficiency measurements, such as brewhouse efficiency, which takes a few other things into account. It's largely...

    Liquid yeast

I believe that older yeast packages can take longer to expand, which is probably why they say three days. While it is true that a single package of liquid yeast doesn’t have the ideal amount of yeast, it will do fine. Consider reading about making yeast starters for future batches, though...
