    Thoughts on PC water containers

Howdy, all. I found a set of 4 "Addipure" polycarbonate water jugs at a local resale shop, new in a box, for $3 each. They're like the big Ozarka-style ones, but with a 2.8 gallon capacity: Of the two holes, the larger one has a gasketed cap with a little threaded post that I could...

CO2 Refills in the Lewisville/Flower Mound Area?

Just did a 20# tank swap at Praxair in Denton today. Cost me $20+tax, which is pretty sweet, BUT even sweeter is that I turned in my crappy 40 year old steel tank with no collar and got a very nice aluminum tank with a single-handle collar! Can't say that it'll happen for everyone, but hot damn...

    Aquarium Chiller Test....

Do you know how much power the chiller consumes at full tilt? I've got a huge ferm chamber and it seems like a shame to be using as much electricity as I am for chilling 5-6 gallons at a time...

Is there any hope for hop mellowing?

I really dislike bottling, so I'm considering starting to piece together a kegging system. Maybe one of my first keg brews will be Redemption SMaSH, thus (marginally) reducing some of the time required to "fix" this stuff.

Is there any hope for hop mellowing?

The second beer that I made is a SMaSH IPA which is roughly based on the recipe here: http://tinyurl.com/a2cbsrh It did about 6 days in primary, then got moved to a 5gal secondary to get it off of the massive trub (didn't filter it on the way in to the primary, whoops) with a wee bit of...

    KPBrews' Inaugural Brew Day

Disclaimer: I'm a br00b and I still am making stupid mistakes, so any advice I give should probably be (advice+salt grain). I have, however, done a ton of reading! With dry yeast, the wee yeasties are conditioned and packaged in such a way that they don't need as much available oxygen in the...

    KPBrews' Inaugural Brew Day

The tap water here in Texas is also tepid at best. During my first brew, guided by a friend with some experience, I was horrified to see how much water got used to run the immersion chiller setup. I decided to make something that would help conserve water, and also would also take less than the...

Now this will be a really stupid beginner question

I took all of the spent grain from my first brew and piled it on top of my compost heap. The center of the pile stayed very damp, and made an unbelievable stench. Next time I do that, I'll spread it out in a thin layer to try to keep that from occurring. The heap is behind my shop, and I...

Why does my LHBS make me feel like a noob?

I'm still a total brewginner at this whole thing, but 3 weeks on the trub has never been mentioned anywhere I've seen as being "out-of-whack." If your beer tastes good, and you like it, you keep doin' you. Sounds like you should limit your exposure to them to purchases and yeast advice only! :D

    Greetings from Midland, Ontario!

There's a Midland, TX, but it's about 4 hours from me and it smells terrible. I hope Midland, ON smells better. Welcome!

Five months? Wow, addictions start fast.

I think the whole swarm got me. My first batch was a German hef that turned out less than optimal (it's mildly-off smell caused me to dub it "Fartenbrau"), so I dug in all available info sources to figure out what could have gone wrong. Read Joy cover to cover, then HowToBrew.com "cover to...

Five months? Wow, addictions start fast.

So, I've been at the homebrew thing for a very brief time now, and I'm already in over my head. My folks moved from north Texas to Michigan in May, and while they were cleaning out their garage, my pops found some brewing stuff tucked away in the corner. Since he had used it once and forgotten...

    Removing labels from glasses

I'd guess that you're going to have to bust out the big guns to get that paint off. Most of that kind of glass paint is cured at high-ish temperatures - I'd try lacquer thinner or some similar thing. Just be sure to wash it well afterward!
