Re: sanitation - This is one of the most useful podcasts I've heard. I'd definitely recommend listening to it, especially if you're using bleach. Basic Brewing Radio ft. Charlie Talley of 5 Star This podcast episode changed the way I sanitize. Sorry to hear you're having trouble, hope you...

    Force carbing via natural carbonation

This concept is both hilariously complicated and modestly intriguing. I say, "Do it!" Don't forget to report back, mit Bilder

    Just moved to Dallas area

Should you find yourself in Denton at some point, our LHBS is Baron's. Lots to do in our weirdo little town - start off by going to Arts & Jazz Fest in April :mug:

So excited! Cracked my first homebrew!

More batches = less worrying each time. Brewing beer is kind of like having kids - the first one gets all the worry and unneeded attention, and even if it turns out a little f'd up, you still love it. Each batch worries you a little less every time, and pretty soon you're watching 5 gallons...

    Journal/Note example?

I use a combination of Brewtarget and this journal. Brewtarget for formulating, exbeerimenting and making shopping lists, and the journal for recording the real-world process and results. I suppose I could document everything electronically, but I have a shiny little glowing (probably...

Secondary for Hefeweizen? And how long?

Just curious - what quality(ies) would you say was(were) improved on the batch you moved to secondary? You're right in that I have seen very few mentions (if any?) of folks moving their hefs to secondary. I did a hef that was kinda awful when sampled before bottling, remained kinda bad after...

Pitching yeast into apple juice for cider

Re: the raisins - if you do it, I'd chop 'em up in to small bits. I did a cider and used raisins to help out the yeasties, but once I went to rack it out, they kept getting sucked toward (and eventually in to the opening of) the siphon. I think if they had been minced up, they would have just...

    How much yeast needed?

Definitely grab another pack. One good thing about US-05 is that it's pretty inexpensive, so there's not much to lose by adding a double dose.

Can I use table sugar in the boil

Also worth noting: I've seen finely powdered dextrose at the nearby supermarket (Kroger), and have purchased it at the nearby hippie retailer (Natural Grocers).

    Hello from Frisco, TX

Hey there, Joey - I'm over in Denton, beer-ing it up :)

    What's that smell?

I agree with the above - just let it condition. I brewed a hef that had a strong... farty (?) smell after I bottled it... I considered dumping it a few times. Three months later, it is a very smooth, good smelling beer that I really enjoy. I wish I had left more bottles alone, instead of...

Class act on the 20% thing! I was post number 27.

    Quick Question

Nice score. I'd say it's definitely possible, but that's a lot of headspace. First rule? No peeking.

Cracks in bottle necks after capping?

My brew bro muscled some unnoticed cracks in to a couple bottles of his black IPA. Neither of us noticed until I went to open one and got a nice handful of gashes on my left appendage. Basically the last 2 inches of the neck came off in a jagged, glassy mess.

BEER KITS BELOW COST.....But I need your help!

This sounds fun... I've been meaning to document a brew day to show my folks in Michigan. If I can figure out a good way to package and ship it, I could even send some of it to them! Since my first (and so far, only) IPA was kind of a disaster, I'd like to try my hand at it again. Sinbad's...

What do you do to make money on the side?

I do IT "side jobs" when I feel like getting some extra equipment bucks - computer/laptop repair, cellphone/tablet screens, that sort of thing. Really, anyone with access to YouTube and a basic set of teeny screwdrivers and spudgers can do this for a decent bit-o-cash. The company I work for...

    Thoughts on PC water containers

You know, looking at the design of these, I wonder if the handle part will be an impossible PitA to clean kraeusen and wort funk out of? Lord only knows I don't need more cleaning woes on bottling day...
