    thinking cider

I know too much sugar will overwhelm the yeast unless its well oxygenated, picked that bit up from beer, but I'm still yet to figure out how much is too much.. so I basically don't have to do anything except add the yeast and let it sit for a week? This sounds easy! Same temperatures I presume...

    thinking cider

So that would be a sweet cider then? There's juice here that is just pure crushed apples, nothing else whatsoever. That's probably what entices me actually, to see how it turns out. I've tried other peoples homebrew cider before, which had added sugar.. tasted about 25%, just couldn't drink the...

    thinking cider

I havnt yet made an Apple cider, yet would like to. Just wondering a couple things, would it be alright to just use pure Apple juice? And with that, how would the percentage of sugar compare with the final gravity reading? For example, the juice that's in front of me now is 11.1% sugar, saying...

    unbreakable?

To me, that's the same thing. Still left me with a flat beer and wet shorts when I went to open it

    unbreakable?

Well, its finally happened. A so called unbreakable bottle has broken. Just a crack along the bottom, but that alone has caused the beer to go flat. Just a reminder, that even PET bottles designed for brewing and advertised as unbreakable really aren't. Wasn't a very hefty brew either, maybe 6%...

    What are you drinking now?

Dark wheat beer, has almost a cappuccino textured head and a slightly smoky flavour

    Sanitizing Question

I actually fill my brew chamber with sanitiser, leave it for a few hours with all the gear in it then rinse with hot water .. but I don't have a rinse free sanitiser, which would make it a lot easier. Star san is like that I think, not too sure though. I'm picky though, everything which goes...

    bad beer?

Used one kilo, and 900 grams it said to use, so an extra 100g, didn't want the rest of the open bag so I stirred it through. Didn't really reflect on the gravity readings

    bad beer?

It's bitter, a bit twangy for want of a different word, wouldn't say sour because I don't mind that but this is just not good. I wouldn't give the worst beer in the world to my brother, and am yet to have a father-in-law. I realise the taste sounds like premature beer, but it did start...

    bad beer?

It was just Australian ale, Coopers can.. actually one of their recipes too. No grain or malt, figured it wouldn't make a massive amount of difference..

1st batch finished, no more, GONE

There were a few times early on I ran dry, but I just kept a solid flow coming, now have a few full brews waiting plus another brewing. It's all about perseverence, and a few light nights.. plus, I did buy a carton just so there was something to drink other than my own. Good luck!

    bad beer?

Ok, so a few months ago I made a fruit salad recipe. The recipe said it was quite drinkable early, which I completely agree with. It light and fizzy, with lovely light fruity flavours. Now, it tastes like ****e to be quite blunt and honest. Used amarillo hops and some other hops, can't...

Bad taste - coopers diy kit

Also, just thinking, did you rinse your diy kit well with hot water? A plastic smell/taste may come from that... I believe I have the same type of setup, which the first step said something like 'although there's no need to sanitise for the first use, rinse well under hot water' there's a...

Bad taste - coopers diy kit

Coopers is basically all I use, I find there is a yeasty kind of taste, but that dissipates as it ages.. but, I usually use different kinds of sugar, if that would make any difference.. I find organic raw sugar works alright, along with brown sugars for the darker brews.. I currently have one...

Did I kill my yeast in starter?

My first brew took a solid 3 days before noticeably starting, but that was old yeast. I was panicking, but just left it, it turned out great.. really should've saved a few bottles. Learnt from that mistake, now I save at least 2 from every batch, plus share some with granda.
