    AB Shock Top (warning?)

I'll loosely quote a statement from a G.E. CEO? He said "We are not in the business to make cars, we are in the business to make money... but to make money, we need to sell car's" I guess my point is, I believe AB could care less if their beer is a hit with real beer lovers, but if they can...

Favorite Beer you buy to save the bottles?

Hofbrau bottles are great. The labels just fall off with no glue residue, they're green but I don't mind. Plus the beer = tasty.

    Belgian Wit Recipe

I'm not experienced enough to comment on your recipe, but as far as the extra water... I would add it to your sparge water & divide by two so you have 2 equal sized 170* sparges. I would also make sure you use DME, not LME and maybe do a late extract addition. Good luck!

    Want to try a PM

After I decided to switch from Extract to PM, the only "new" item I needed was a MLT. Search the forum if you're handy and want to build one for cheap. If I may add my $.02 though... If you are thinking about going PM, I would really make sure you understand how to tweak an extract recipe so...

    Bagel dispute: open vs. closed

Open lasts longer. The only reason I'd do closed is if it were a bagel/egg sandwich. This poll is CLOSED!

Big Moon (Belgian Style Wit Ale) Recipe Tweaks

I just brewed up a batch of Belgian Wit which is in secondary now. After doing a lot of research on this forum, I found a few people that mentioned blue moon was made by Coors, which uses California Ale Yeast. If it's not too late, drop the belgian yeast & pickup some Cali. If I had to guess...

    Star-san..... illegal in NY?

To be fair, I did not catch the guy's name. It could be Jim, or Bob, or Jimbob for all I know. The handfull of times I've gone into the store, I've encountered only three people. One very quiet guy, one very talkative (and what I thought was informative) guy (Jim?), and a nice lady. 1lb of...

    Star-san..... illegal in NY?

Thank you to everyone for responding to my post. All this information has certainly given me some "ammo" to bring back to my LHBS. I will hopefully take a trip tomorrow or Friday to follow up on this issue, and I'll be sure to post my results. Thanks again and happy brewing:mug:

    Star-san..... illegal in NY?

Wasn't there some EPA Initiative against pesticides to protect honey bee's? Just throwing it out there...

    Star-san..... illegal in NY?

This is very interesting. The guy seemed like a genuine, straight forward kind've guy. Maybe he was mis-informed? Here is their website for anyone who's interested: http://www.arborwine.com/index.html

    Star-san..... illegal in NY?

So after reading so much hype about the quality of Star-san, I decided to go to my LHBS to pick some up for myself. I was informed that Star-san is illegal in NY because it can be used as a pesticide? Apparently LHBS was fined $5,000 for carrying it. He then suggested one-step, which is what...

    First Mash = Success!

Makes sense to prop up the cooler before the mash-in... Thanks. Any tips on vorlaufing? I had a hard time not disturbing the grain bed in a 5gal round cooler MLT setup. After some reading, it looks like my next mash will be a Single infusion, mash out, double sparge. I'm excited to see...

    Cooler cooling off

Nobody asked what type of cooler you used? I'm assuming its a square type? I like that insulation over the top method, but if your cooler is poorly designed to begin with, why not spend the $40 on a decent cooler that will retain heat better? I have the 5 Gal round style, and it only lost 1...

    First Mash = Success!

So I completed my first PM last night. Belgian Wit. Went pretty much flawless and wound up with the best tasting wort I've made so far. (I'm used to extracts). I owe all thanks to the information on this forum for sure. Here's a few questions I had during my experience: 1. When you finish...

    Centennial Blonde First AG

Told you it was a silly question. So Beersmith automatically adjusts for losses (like grain absorbtion)? What a cool program.

    Centennial Blonde First AG

I've decided my first AG will be the Centennial Blonde. I am very excited to showcase this beer mid-summer. I have one, probably silly question regarding your Beersmith recipe. I noticed where you select Batch Sparge as your method, it doesn't tell you how much volume to sparge with. So I'm...

    Partial Mash - Calculating Efficiency

I am using a kit, so I'm not sure they included a mash schedule. They also did not provide ingredients/weights so I cannot put it into Beersmith. I suppose I'll just use this one to get some practice in mashing, and then swith to AG and not worry about it anymore. I can get a 48qt SS pot for...

    Partial Mash - Calculating Efficiency

So I assume Beersmith has a pre-boil gravity as well as a post top-off gravity? I guess my question is more along the lines of, great you nailed your pre-boil gravity... but what if you put too much water in the wort post boil? Wouldn't you rather put in a gallon or so less top off water...

    Partial Mash - Calculating Efficiency

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems if I really want to nail my efficiency, or make it seem like I nailed my efficiency, I can just top off with less than 5gal, and add water until I hit the gravity I'm looking for? I feel like I'm cheating! Of course proportionally it wouldn't be the...

    Partial Mash - Calculating Efficiency

When you calculate efficiency of a partial mash, I'm assuming you can only do a post-boil/post "top-off" hydrometer reading for an accurate calculation? :mug:
