    Spontaneous hops death

Also, thanks for the response, I know it is a vague problem.

    Spontaneous hops death

Maybe, but they are well drained. I put in a special drain hole at the bottom of the can so that any standing water would run out. Plus the leaves were crinkly and dry, not what I would expect from over watering. But it is still a possibility. I just got back in from working on them. I dug a...

    Spontaneous hops death

Let me set the scene: It has been around 90* every day for the past week or so My hops have been growing strong for a couple months or so I have been watering them every day until they are quenched I have been fertilizing them with spent grains and trub They are in a 10 gallon trash can...

    Peat Smoked Malt

And just in case you dont want to read the whole thing, I used a pound in 5 gallons.

    Peat Smoked Malt

Here is my thread on my peated porter. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/first-recipe-peated-porter-327012/ I love this beer. There are only minor things I would change. This beer taught me to go with my gut. I dont think peat malt gives a medicinal flavor. It tastes briney to me, with a nice...

    National Homebrew Day - May 4th 2013

A local brew shop is hosting its annual event where you bring a new brewer and they give you a kit to brew. So my brew buddy and I are going to try and get this other guy into it. Im pretty excited, I haven't hung out with a lot of other brewers, hopefully my maple porter is conditioned by then.

BIG beer, and the perrils faced by yeast

I am planning on bottling, but only after I am sure the gravity is as low as its going to go. I aerated the starter by shaking tye bejeebies out of it, not exactly pure O2. I was worried about the attenuation being maxed out... I will check it again in a couple weeks, after finals. Thanks

BIG beer, and the perrils faced by yeast

I ended up getting some more champagne yeast and making a medium starter. I pitched it this morning and I already have airlock activity.

BIG beer, and the perrils faced by yeast

My brew buddy and I made a huge beer (1.132) out of a couple kits from NB. We scaled down the hops a bit and added some malts. We pitched the English yeast strain that came with the kit in a gallon starter. She fermented away for a week or three down to 1.065. The hydrometer sample was still...

    Maple Porter Recipe

I haven't got my kegging equipment yet, so I will be bottling. I can throw something up here to help you along. Im waiting on some grade B syrup though. If you dont hear from me in a couple week, pm me and remind me.

    Raspberry addition?

In my experience half a can of the raspberry puree from NB is enough to give a mild flavor. I have never had the beer in question, but you can scale the profile as needed. I would imagine a brown has more malt flavor than half a can can overcome though. I racked onto my raspberry when...

what do I need to start kegging?

Awesome. What size hoses, what range regulators and gages? I will check out birdman, do a little shopping around. Thanks all!

what do I need to start kegging?

I have a 5gallon keg already, but I was wondering what all I need to go the rest of the way to kegging. I know I will need a CO2 bottle and some tubes, but anything more specific than that is a mystery. I looked on NB but they don't seem to sell a kit without the kegs, unless I go with...

    broken brinkmann turkey fryer

Tech support called me back today. It turns out my thermocouple wasn't getting hot enough. I UN-mounted (Paint Your Wagon Reference....) from the body assembly and it is now free floating above the burner and it seems to be working. Thanks for all your help

    broken brinkmann turkey fryer

I pulled the leads, but I didn't think of shorting them together. Thanks! I will try that as soon as I can.

    broken brinkmann turkey fryer

I received a brinkmann fryer/burner combo for my birthday a couple months back and imagine my surprise when I went to brew with it and it refused to stay lit without me holding the little red gas cutoff valve. I am waiting on a response from the company, but does anyone here have any ideas on...

Cutting the bottom out of a freezer...

them side by side. The orientation shouldn't be a huge deal, but I am just looking out for your efficiency. Supporting equations Convection: q(dot)=h(Tsurface-Tambient) this means that you can get more heat transfer by either increasing the delta T or increasing the amount of airflow...

    Lowes Igloo Mash Tun

I did a 2 hour mash on accident the other day and I only lost a degree in my blue tun. As for buying a kit to build it, you are better off looking at one of the tutorials on here and following suit. I saved a bunch of money this way, and my tun was built in under an hour.

    Maple Porter Recipe

That looks similar to what I made (in secondary now). I am thinking of bottle conditioning with maple syrup because it isnt shining through like I wanted. Good luck.

    Huckleberry recipe help or recommendations...

Your numbers should be fine. I think the best course of action would be to put some in the boil and then adjust the taste in the secondary, you can always add more flavor but it is hard to take is back. I have always just thrown the berries into the secondary after smashing them up, but I am...
