Chest freezer died. Would like something front load

I think it is 16 cubic ft. The freezer is 60-inches tall, outside. If you go any smaller and want to stack your fermenters you run out of space on the top. They will fit, just the top fermenter needs a right angle blowoff tube. The smaller ones are the same dimensions, except for the height. I...

Puzzle: Volume<->Gravity calculation Beersmith vs reality

You're right, there are two efficiencies, brewhouse and mash. If your brewhouse is not correct, your OG and other estimates won't be either. I adjust my BH efficiency every batch, as soon as I get my preboil gravity. So if my original estimated preboil says 1.043 and I come in at 1.047, I...

Puzzle: Volume<->Gravity calculation Beersmith vs reality

Isn't efficiency one the inputs you put in?

To scoop out hot break or leave it?

I don't scoop. I tried it and it seemed like I was going to remove a bunch of hop material, so I stopped. I don't use a hop spider or bag and frequently first wort hop.

making another attempt at Dopplebock...special B?

I do equal parts Munich l, Munich ll, Vienna and Pils, 3% caramunich & melanoinde, 2% acidulate and 1% carafa ll, 90-minute boil. Decoction if you can. I shoot for lower 20's ibu. Wlp833.

    Request: Augustiner Marzen Clone

I would get rid of that cara/malts in that quantity, maybe 4oz total. Replace (even bump up) with some light Munich or Vienna or even the Maris Otter someone else suggested above. Also add first wort hopping to the equation, definitely decoction if you can. I would try a different yeast. 34/70...

my local city water report...is this water good to use as-is?

You don't start that statement with "I'm from corporate and here to help" do you? 🤣

    Comments on RO System "schematic"

Chest freezer for the All Rounder

Have you looked at upright freezers? Frost free version have removal shelves. You wouldn't be leaning over trying to jockey into a small opening, but standing upright and have room to dry hop and adjust your spunding valve. I use two of them in my garage. Not as pretty as glycol chillers, etc...

    Brewing IPLs

No sure what calculator you're using, but the one I just checked for 3g, 1.038og at 55 degrees say 12.3gms, a little over one pack? At 50 degrees it's 14.2gm.

Mash Caps... Let me see what you got!

I suppose it would, but right now I just put a cover on my MT, so i would like to believe something at/on the surface would be better then the lid i use now. No splashing on my recirc or sparge. I use a hose (not silcone) that floats/lies on the surface. I guess the same question regarding...

Mash Caps... Let me see what you got!

I'm still searching for something that might work, too. I still use a keggle as my MT, so I need something to fold like the false bottom I have. Anyone try using those silicone baking mats and cutting it down? Just don't think they would float/stay on top of the mash when recirculating.

    Brewing IPLs

I wouldn't cold crash until the diacetyl is gone or to a level you want. Then cold crash it, otherwise, you may be warming up your kegged beer to finish off a diacetyl rest. Not an issue doing this but more days having to wait.

How to Keep Picnic Faucets Clean in Garage Keezer?

I use these for my regular taps, not sure how they would fit for picnic taps. Dishwasher safe, so easy to clean. I also just hit it with starsan before reinserting.

    $upport your local store, until....

If you read the small print at any propane exchange place, usually where the price is, it will tell you what amount they fill to. There was huge lawsuit years ago when the "exchange industry" started specifically about the short filling, so now they disclose it so as not to deceive the customer...

How are You Measuring Fermentation Temperature?

Inkbird in a thermowell with the fermenter sitting in an upright freezer. Yes I calibrate my thermometers once a year or so.

District of Columbia What a grim month for DC area brewers: RIP MyLHBS and Annapolis HB.

Nashville's only full-time store, Tri-Star, just announced it was closing after the first of the year. We do have another one, From the Garage, but he's not an actual store front so his hours are at his convenience. This is fine as he is easily accessible and has a good selection.
