    Primary Question

When talking about how long the wort has been in the primary ... do you start right when you throw it into the Carboy/bucket or when the yeast starts working and fermenting? I'm on 9 days of time in carboy but 6 since fermenting started.

    Eek, Infected?

My first batch is fermenting at a solid rate (1 bubb / 2-3seconds) but is releasing a pretty nasty smell. It's pungent and just kinda weird. I fear that it being my first beer, I might have rushed into things and contaminated it! Here's a picture of it ... Recipe ... Fat Tire Amber...

An initial THANK YOU for all the information I've absorbed over the past 3 weeks. Now the questions ... Is there way to make sure / test to see if you have an airtight Primary (using a 6 gal. glass carboy with stopper and bubbler). I have the plug almost all the way in with the bubbler...

    New Brewer (Omaha NE)

After a few weeks of research I'm purchasing my brew kit tomorrow and looking forward to brewing my first brew this following week or two! I've scoured this board and a few others trying to take in the numorous information available. If anyone from the Omaha area wants to swap brews (after I...

    low alcohol

ABW = 76.08(OG - FG) / (1.775 - OG) That's the equation. If you want to take it to ABV ... ABV = ABW(FG / .784) Hope that helps. Though, I believe you can also do 131 * (OG - FG) to find Alcohol percentage (at least that's what one of the spreadsheets do)

    Hello / Question

Thank you for more reading material! I'm quite a book worm and will go look into those tomorrow. I'm also going to go to my local HBS and see what they have. Again, thank you for the quick, very helpful responses. I'll be purchasing a kit in the next week (after I decide which one) and...

    Hello / Question

Thank you for the quick responses! Reading what you have posted ... would this be a wise selection? http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdByID.aspx?ProdID=3316 I prefer the Better Bottles over Glass just for its unbreakableness and light weight.
