First time - trying to use hydrometer - Help Please!!

I tasted my first batch on bottling day 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and finished the last bottle on the 12th day. (Hey I was off work for 2 weeks!) I can honestly say, the bottles on the 11th and 12th day bottled were really starting to taste nice. A lot of the off flavours, chalky, yeasty, sweet...

Anything wrong with shaking the homebrew/wine after it starts to ferment?

So... theory and experience asides, based on experimental evidence, why does swivelling the barrel produce a near immediate increase in activity? "increase in activity" is granted based on those "secondary indications" you mention as "unreliable". However, if all other things remain static...

Anything wrong with shaking the homebrew/wine after it starts to ferment?

I have found with my last 2 ferments, the ones I have watched intently, that after the first aerobic phase where the foam fills the heads space that there is a period where everything calms down. Even the pressure drops and the puffed up lid relaxes. I've left it like that for 2 days and it...

    Question on bottling and yeast

Can I ask a couple of related questions.... Do yeast only multiple in presence of O2 or will the multiply in just the presence of sugar? Do yeast multiply in anything like the rapid rate bacteria do? I vaguely recall a doubling time of 20 minutes under ideal conditions. Are yeast similar?

    Super Noobie question (extract instructions)

My, just finished fermenting, Kit+Hopped DME+Sugar batch is lovely. Not bland at all. Quite tasty amber ale at about 5% ABV. Going to be awesome when it conditions for 3 weeks. But... I'm not really a beer 'snob'.

    Creamy texture.

Speaking of cost.... maybe another thread soon on this... I made a spreadsheet totalling Ingredients, Equipment (allocated to batches) and even Electric/gas for each brew. I then create a £/l price of my normal beer bought from an off-license (In this country you can sell alcohol for...

    Creamy texture.

DME isn't cheap either :( Muntons is like £4.50 per 500g! This is "Youngs" which is £6 a kilo. All grain is much cheaper, maybe next one, although with only a 12lt boil (50%) I'm not sure it will work right.

    Creamy texture.

Order placed: 3Kg (6.6lb) Light DME 500g (1.1lb) Light Crystal Malt (EBC 60?) 500g (1.1lb) Caramunch 100g Willamette 100g EKG Irish Ale Yeast. Total: £47 including shipping! $73. Granted I won't be using all the crystal or caramunch, and only half the hops (or less). The worrying thing for...

    Creamy texture.

Okay, I'm hovering over "Check Out" with: 3Kg (6.6lb) Light DME 500g (1.1lb) Light Crystal Malt (EBC 60?) Willamette + EKG (heard Fuggles tastes of 'earth/dirt', not cool!) Irish Ale Yeast. And... 500g of Caramunch OR Special B. Price is already more than I like due to the Willamette and...

    Creamy texture.

I've seen torrified wheat in IRA (err... unfortunate acronym!) recipes before. Does it need mashed and can't be BIAB? This looks interesting... http://www.hopshopuk.com/products/view/1723/beer-making/ingredients/colourings-flavourings-and-head-retention/creamy-top

    Creamy texture.

I'm building up to my next brew order and currently it's looking a little ... unimaginative. Light DME + Crystal 40L + Irish Ale Yeast. So I'm thinking of one more ingredient to try. Hoping to order today to get a chance of brewing it on Sat/Sun. Target: Irish Red Ale, light red hue (not...

Is it possible to get a creamy texture without nitrogen?

    Super Noobie question (extract instructions)

I "got away" without either of those my first 2 times. Quality of beer asides, it fermented (though granted the second one stalled halfway through and never really restarted, it remains to be seen if it even carbs in a sensible timeline). The lid did puff up, but they (mine at least) where...

    Super Noobie question (extract instructions)

As newbie to newbie: Boil some (a gallon or 2) or water, melt the DME into it. Warm the kit can in some other water (makes it easier to pour). Tip the DME solution into your barrel, tip in the kit can, add a little more boiling water, stir in the sugar (you can buy more or use table sugar for...

Can I add sugar to boost ABV

Over we here we have several high ABV beers. Almost all of them taste foul. Carlsberg Special brew is like drinking paint stripper. Satzenbreu is about the only drinkable one, it's expensive, strong (about 7%), but still not a beer you can throw into you. I just don't think beer is meant to...

    Og 1.045 - fg 1.008

I took a sample of my Coopers Real Ale + DME and to my surprise the FG was 1.008. Happy days. A nice full ferment. Still not going to bottle it yet, it has until the weekend to rest, bring it to 2 weeks in the FV. I think this is the first batch that actually fermented consistently for 7...

    Bottle bomb?

Well the bottle was fine when I got home. Quite a lot of pressure to release, but no drama. :) I just released the pressure and resealed the bottle. It smells foul, but tastes nice. I expect that is the yeast/alcohol/co2 and it might end up better.

    What Else Do I Need?

Okay, fair enough, so what I did was a partial boil, extract recipe with BIAB speciality grains and hop additions :D That better?

    Bottle bomb?

Nah, I'm still at work and now quite worried, the bottle is just sitting in my living room... carpet, curtains, sofas, TV and electrics (although it's not near any of them). Fingers crossed it's till intact when I get home. Will the ginger bits (including peal) sink?

    What Else Do I Need?

I just did a partial boil (extract + grains + hops) recipe, coming like you from a few kits. All I needed extra was a few strainer bags to use like tea bags for the grain and hops and a large 3 gallon stock pot to boil stuff in.
