    Bottling after lagering

So I'm planning on brewing a lager soon and have a question regarding storage after bottling. Since the beer will have been kept cold for weeks when I bottle it should it be ok to store at room temp? I'm assuming it will be fine since companies have been selling room tempt lagers for a long...

    Parti gyle question

That's a good point I haven't thought about with the second beer being thinner. I don't recall seeing partigyle in beersmith, is there another software option for this method or did I overlook it?

    Parti gyle question

Porter, of course! Cannot believe I didn't think of that. I have a 50qt mlt. Thanks for the ideas and yes it doesn't really matter what my second beer is. I like the idea of getting two for one and the anticipation of what may turn out. And adding the malt extract is also a good idea.

    Parti gyle question

So, my next brew session looks like I may have an extra hand and I like to take advantage of it by having a party gyle session. However, I was planning on making a stout next. The question is what can also be made alongside a stout? Do I make a bigger stout and smaller beer or a bigger beer of...

    Pasteurizing cider?

Thanks but I skip the canning process. Just filling the jars with 160* temp and laying them on their sides the jars will seal. Either way works.[emoji4]

    Pasteurizing cider?

I ended up with 9gal. 4gal I put in the HLT with a heating element and set the stc-1000 to 160* then put the remaining 5gal in a carboy with five campden tablets. I'll be using US05 yeast in a fermentation fridge at 65*+/-. Once the 4gal sat a 160* for fifteen minutes I poured it into quart...

    Pasteurizing cider?

That's a fair point. However, I'm planning on canning half of what I make for the kids. I guess I left that part out. My HLT is 120V so can move it anywhere I would need it.

    Pasteurizing cider?

I'm pressing apples tomorrow and I was going to use my HLT to pasteurize the cider. My HLT has a heating element in it so my question is would there be any ill affects from using the vessel? Last year I just did it on a stove top but this year I'll have more to heat up.

    Help deciphering readings

Acidrain: my HLT, BK have sight glasses that I calibrated in .5gal increments and the fermenter was calibrated the same way, by pouring .5 gal at a time and marking the sides. I used 3oz of pellet hops. Smelly glove: I suspected my refract was thrown of somehow or I missed something along the...

    Help deciphering readings

Yeah, the boil off was that much. I started with 8.5 and 5.25 went into the fermenter. Some loss was from the trub in the kettle. When it's finished I should be able to tell if the alcohol is higher. The boil off calculator has me at 1.085. Guess I'll just have to brew another batch to...

    Help deciphering readings

So this weekend I used some new equipment for my brew day. Pre-Boil Gravity was 13brix (1.053)post boil OG is 16brix (1.065). My issue is i used a 10" banjo compared to the small turkey fryer burner and boiled off 3gal. In one hour! Went from 8.5g preboil to 5.5g in keg kettle. Not sure how that...

Spreadsheet for doing Calculation by hand?

How to brew has a lot of the math equations. I used those to build an excel spreadsheet for calculations. There other resources out there if you Google them.

    Gray Wort!

The first two pics are from the crush I did at home and mashed in the cooler going through a manifold. The next two are the biab crushed by LHBS. The last is a pic after I combined them and boiled. Neither had a dark gray color thankfully.

    Gray Wort!

Update: I went through the same process as before. This time I had 2lbs of 2-row milled at LHBS and 2lbs I milled at home. One batch BIAB and the other in mash my cooler with a manifold. Both batches came out just fine. Neither had that terrible gray color. Biab was more cloudy. In conclusion I...

    Gray Wort!

Interesting, would that make it look gray? In retrospect I should've finished the batch to see what would happen. I'm going to make another batch the same way this weekend just to see if it happens again and this time I will adjust the grain mill.

    Gray Wort!

It was so opaque and ugly I didn't even boil it. I just dumped it out.

    Gray Wort!

Thanks for the tip. That's is my plan the next go around.

    Need help troubleshooting

Thanks for the reply. I didn't get to the boiling stage so there are no hops added either. After looking at the it again it does look like troob. When I poured it into a glass it was a milky gray. There was a lot to style out but I didn't trust the color.

I'm out of space - what are my options?

Do you have family or friends that live nearby? Maybe you could brew and ferment at their place. Just offer some samples as repayment. Is there a yard big enough for a small shed. You could run a heavy duty extension cord out to it for temporary use.

    Need help troubleshooting

I made a small 2 gallon batch to use for yeast starters and wound up with gray colored wort! What could have caused this? I used a new grain mill, and just plain 2-row barley with bottled water. I'm wondering if the grain mill could've done it. I read after I used it that .5lb should be run...
