How many gallons of homebrew in 2009?

    28,031 + another 5 gallons of Yooper's Dogfish Head 60-minute IPA clone = 28,036

What's your local going price for 50lbs of 2 row?

$59 for 50# unmilled Brewer's 2-row from the LHBS 10 minutes away. Ick. I can almost get 50# of Rahr *shipped* from Rebel Brewer for that.

Gross. Although I guess it's best not to throw stones; it is homebrewing, after all.

Um, what? You have a recipe for a good-tasting, 9.5% abv beer that only runs $6 for six gallons? And you haven't shared it in this thread? Are you trying to torture us?

    Simarillo IPA

I'm considering brewing this eventually, but I've got a few questions. First of all, it's just 2 ounces each of the caramel malts, right? Also, I don't think I can get CaraRed at my LHBS; would Munich be a decent substitute? And how about Nottingham instead of 1056? I absolutely love...

Dang. What's your LHBS? Are you near a brewery or something?

    Cheapest all-grain homebrew recipes

Right now I'm drinking a batch of Orfy's Mild-Mannered Ale, which is cheap but has a great flavor. I used 6.0 lbs Marris Otter, 1.5 lbs crystal 60L and 5 ounces of chocolate malt, mash at 158F for 60 minutes, 1 oz. Fuggles @ 45 and another ounce at 15. Total cost under $25.

I don't know. I keep a bucket of OxyClean and just drop in bottles when I'm done drinking them and then empty it every couple of weeks. The next time I drink one of these, I'll just soak it in tap water overnight to see what happens to the label. I'll let you know how things go.

Polyester (PET) braid in a mash tun

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work. PET is pretty inert, and if it claims respectable temperature rating, I'd definitely go for it. I really hated working with the SS braid on my MLT and eventually replaced it with a hand-me-down (i.e. "free") KettleScreen, which I've been happy...

Cheap bottles at Costco, with beer inside!

I was at Costco in Austin the other day, and in the beer aisle I spotted a case of Kirkland Signature "Handcrafted Lagers and Ales". (Kirkland is Costco's store brand.) The whole case was only $18.99, so I thought, "How bad could it be?" Turns out the answer is "not bad at all!" The...

    Electric HLT ground question

Okay, that all makes perfect sense. I actually picked up an extra copper "washer" when I was getting the rest of the parts, so I think I'm good to go. Thanks to all three of you! -g-

    Electric HLT ground question

I've finally assembled all the parts (I think) to build my electric HLT in a 10-gallon Rubbermaid cooler. I've got a 120V 1500W element. However, before I get too far into this, I've got a question. What do I do with the ground wire? I'm planning to do like The Pol and connect the black...

    Howdy from Austin

Hey, welcome! Austin Homebrew is a great shop. The guys there have never steered me wrong or tried to sell me something I didn't need, and the prices are great. I just wish they'd crush their grains a little finer; I need to get a barley crusher because my efficiency sucks and I think my...

Ahhhh, success - how sweet it is!!!

So you just dump the hot wort straight/unfiltered into a US Plastics container, wait a couple of days for it to cool, and then transfer into the regular fermenter? And you chill the carboy by putting it in a refrigerator or something so the gunk will settle out before pouring? -g-
