    Adding dark grains late.

I brewed Gordon's Dunkel Weizen, adding the dark grains late and was really pleased with the results. Think your description is spot on and (at least in this case) the milder character was a plus. Mike

I use a kettle hop spider from Morebeer... http://www.morebeer.com/products/kettle-spider.html ...and have one of these hanging off of my TOP (aka Das Beer Dialysis Machine) as well for keeping junk out my chillers (two Duda Diesel B3-36A's). https://www.brewershardware.com/FILTER1.html M

Thanks. I just recently converted the BrewEasy from NG to electric (both TOP controlled) and have been a tad disappointed in the heating times. Benefit of brewing indoors still outweighs the time, but I have been casting about for a fix and your solution is intriguing. Good to know your mash...

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

Nice. Like the mount, very clean and that switch is cool. At 40#'s for the motor and 26#'s for the gear reduction though, that puppy needed some wheels! :) I had trouble working out the wiring for reverse, but as someone pointed out - with that much HP, who's ever going to need reverse!! M

So are you essentially using the boil kettle as grant while mashing then? M

I ramp to 168 deg and continue to circulate for 10 minutes. Reading Gordon Strong's latest, this looks to be the ideal time to "Mash Cap" (his term not mine), where you add dark grains during the mashout to avoid bitterness. Mighty tempted to try this out with a Dunkleweizen this weekend...

    Blichmann BrewEasy

At first thought 8-12 hours seems long, but looking at my last brew log, maybe not: 2-hours to collect and heat 17 gallons of RO water to strike temperature. 10-minute dough-in 90-minute mash 20-minute mashout (10 to raise temperature + 10 to hold) 25-minutes to heat to boil 90-minute boil (I...

    Adding dark grains late.

I have been enjoying Gordon's latest book as well and wondering the same about adding grains in a no-sparge/BIAB/recirculating system. So if I am understanding the prior posts, the last 15 minutes (essentially mashout) is the way to go? Thanks, Mike

Similar to my regime as well. Will add that while the boil starts, I'll dump the spent grains and have rinsed the mash kettle with a hose, reassembling everything after brewing to circulate PBW. I don't do the overnight soak, but circulate for about 15 minutes before pumping the PBW out...

+1 I have one of those hanging off my TOP (what we affectionately refer to as "Das Beer Dialysis Machine" around here. I am also using a MoreBeer kettle Spider (http://www.morebeer.com/products/kettle-spider.html) with a 4" Tri-clover fitting to hold the hop bag on (pretty slick actually)...

Awesome! Stopped by the local brew shop this morning and ordered a boilcoil for my 10-gallon BrewEasy... tired of being weather limited. RE: the fogging, do you have any exhaust fan going at all? Thanks, M

Danam404, Awesome input! Will definitely put those into practice on my next batch. Thanks for taking the time to share from your conversation with John. M

    Blichmann BrewEasy

I basically did. I started with a Blichmann burner, purchased the full-TOP and was doing 5-gallon recirculating BIAB batches in a Bayou Classics pot with perforated basket. I purchased the pots and BrewEasy conversion when I moved up to 10-gallon batches. Anything specific you need to know? M

    Blichmann BrewEasy

In my all of two brews experience on the new BrewEasy, I was outdoors on a natural gas fired Blichmann burner with ambient temperatures in the low to mid-40's and light winds. To maintain a steady 152°F in the mash tun. I was recording the following: MT = 152° BK = 158° TOP = 160° Indoors with...

    Blichmann BrewEasy

Hadn't thought about that... That would certainly explain why the temperature came back up so quickly once recirculating and I could certainly see where it could overshoot as you suggest. Hmmmm... any others wish to weigh in with what you have experienced? Great conversation! M

Not skipping, but with a 6° temperature differential between the tun and kettle. Skipping the heat loss and doing the full volume at once seems more efficient, and thus shorter... :dunno: M
