    DIY convoluted copper

I've a new idea for instant step mashes ( > 40F/min ), but that may need zero gravity to work ... so maybe the space rocket is the next step :D

    DIY convoluted copper

I like plots too :) I found this one that I though I already deleted. It shows better how the CFC with the outer PVC hose performed: The in going water was about 78C. 1st I ran it with with free flow 2.5L/min. Without any cooling water the temperature (blue line) drops a couple of degrees...

    DIY convoluted copper

There's a skateboard bearing that is "leaning" against the tube. I just screw it against the tube with the threaded rod with handle on it's end. Pretty simple thing really. I made a few test holes to get the angles right. I 1st just had a knife blade against the tube to mark how fast it moves...

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

If I get it "ready enough" to be shared, I might. I shared it on one other forum, but it was so bad I later deleted :o It's not a much of a help for anyone at it's current state. My 1st code ever, 33kb of very confusing coding that needs an Excel sheet for a map... And yet another thing I...

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

If you are referring my plots, I'm trying to get the HLT water down when I'm heating the mash to mash off. Otherwise my sparge water would be too hot and I would get all the tannins etc. in my beer. There's absolutely no problem to maintain the HLT temp as high as you want, just dial the HLT to...

    A new electric BK-build

Yes it is, I made a plywood flange on the other side to make it rigid enough. I've done about 10 boils with it and it's still holding on... When, yes when, the silicone starts to leak, I'll replace it with a real casket. I 1st tried to braze the bowl to the kettle, but that was impossible to...

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

I agree, I'm building "a space ship" here. If that bothers you, be happy with your build, never mind my stories, just make more beer :) To me the main thing is, within this thread, how powerful the "black box" is. And what I've learned from my builds is that the counterflow HERMS is the best...

    DIY convoluted copper

I want to you guys to think too ;) Everything is made so easy nowadays with the google and all ;) It's basically a thread die, a very dull one. Drill a hole that has two angles. One angle is for the angle that the bearing is against the copper and other for how fast it moves when you roll it on...

    Stainless or Wood Bench

When aluminum is oxidized (all the time, if not scratched) it has a really high impedance. I went with (ply)wood. It's easy and cheap to make changes and that's a really big thing to me as my rig seems to be evolving all the time. With a proper varnish it's easy to keep clean too. I didn't...

MAX31865 RTD to Digital Converter (pt100)

Any particular reason that you want to use pt100 with the Arduino instead of the ds18b20? ds18b20's are very very good and easy to work with. All of mine have been super linear and they all give out the same reading -> no need to calibrate like the analog devices. Keep us posted how it goes...

Show us your sculpture or brew rig

Details: - an Arduino controlled (Pano-Matti) heating + volumes (flow meter now, scale to be added for the BK) - Fully automatic mash time/temperature control - CFC-HERMS - 2 pumps, one for the HERMS. A bigger one for HERMS-CFC-heating, same pump takes care of the whirlpool as well. -...

    DIY convoluted copper

I've been destroying a lot of copper tube, but finally got my tool working: Gutted: CFC: Double copper test (ugly): Test plot, 3.5L/min flow for hot water, 10L/min for the cool (12C): I used 15mm copper for the copper/pvc-CFC and some imperial about the same size for the double...

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

.... to make thing as complicated as possible. No matter which (HERMS)-system you choose, you will always have problems with the mash temperature control, if only one probe is used. - if the probe is in HLT only, there's no way of telling what the mash temp really is and the stratification...

    A new electric BK-build

It's a 2nd hand cheap kettle, really thin walls. The bowl at the bottom is from 2nd store. Screws and the heating element are from recycling shop at the dump. The whole thing cost me about $25US.

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

Here's how my plumbing is done (about): I use the HERMS CFC pump to make a whirlpool as well and that makes things a little bit more complicated.

    A new electric BK-build

I couldn't make the whirlpool spin properly in my old kettle, so I tried a new build with the heating element in vertical position. I also added a bowl to act as a trub trap. It's working :mug: http://youtu.be/KrfgtqXgVsU

    HERMS vs. "Counterflow" HERMS

It's mainly because I don't have any idea what I'm doing. I've just been reading about mashing and I guess this one will be a quite dry beer :P
