hops turned brown as they were drying - discard them?

Check out the huge pile of hops behind yours truly.....see all the brown hops.... This is from Mike Goodings Hop farm near Wilder, Idaho......

hops turned brown as they were drying - discard them?

I have watched many commercial hop harvests. They cut down the bines and process all the hops at the same time in September. There is always a mix of Brown Hops with the green hops.......I need to find a photo.....

    tons of free hops questions.

Rule of Thumb: 5 ounces of wet hops = 1 ounce of dry. Important to remember that hops need to be dried within 24 hours of picking.

    No cones...

Where do you live? That has a lot to do with the timing of the burrs...... I have been growing hops for 11 years now and usually get rid of a few plants each year and add a couple. My new Centenial is 14 feet high and shooting out side arms with many burrs.....I hope to harvest 4 or 5 ounces...

    "Tranny" Hops

That is how it got started in the first place....moved one of my Cascade plants and it came up in the same spot. .....probably use Round Up on it....

hops turned brown as they were drying - discard them?

No problem. I always have a few browns in my hop bags. As long as they are mostly green, you should be Okay. Are you going to vacuum pack them?

Nice......very nice. My Hops are at least 4 weeks away from Harvest. Where do you live?
  10. BRONCOBREW

Has anyone here rasied hops from seeds?

It has been destroyed.......could cause problems and I could see no upside. The flowers were cute, very tiny and gave off a very fine pollen dust........but they are in the trash now.....

That is a Bummer. I have friends in Texas that tried to raise hops. I sent them multiple rhizomes over the years. They finally gave up. Some areas in the country are great for raising hops, others not so good. Like I said in an earlier post, I live 15 miles from commercial hop growers...
  12. BRONCOBREW

What kind of hops are these?

The only sure way is to send it to Hop Union to be analyzed. I can not tell the difference between Chinook and Cascades by the smell test or the difference between Tettnanger and Fuggles. Better to buy some rhizomes, then you will know for sure...

Something I've never seen (Male Hop Parts)

This plant is a Cascade. I moved it last year and the male came up in the same hole this year.....from trauma I guess.

Has anyone here rasied hops from seeds?

Thanks for the advice guys. I had a male EKG....not my fault, and I DID kill it, but apparently not soon enough. So I had these seedlings all over our sandbox near the Sunbeam Hop plant. I am waiting now to see if the new plants are male or female. This season, I had a male Cascade Hop...

Those Hops are Amazing......my Cascades are that last to mature out of 16 varieties that I raise. Where do you live? My Cascade Hops will not get that big till mid August. I live in an area where they raised a lot of commercial hops and have get about a pound of dried hops per plant.
