Your are right that it has slippery and leaves that residue. So is Oxyclean considered a sanitizer in the same manner as Starsan? Sorry to change the subject of the thread....
I also only use OneStep and haven't had any issues (so far). I just make sure to clean everything very thoroughly in the OneStep solution. My only comlaint is that my plastic tubing got a little discolored from cleaning with it.
Had a room temp English Pale last night and it really made a difference! I actually tried a glass of it ice cold before trying at room temp for comparison. Warmer is definately better. Thanks for the advice!
AJF, Thanks for the info....I just cracked my first English IPA open last night and poured it into a frosty mug from the freezer. Tasted good, but not great. Will let it warm a little tonight and compare.
I have had the same problem in the past also and think my problem was one of 2 things:
1. Not thoroughly mixing in the priming sugar enough before bottling
2. Not adding enough sugar.
The remedy to 1. was easy. I prep my priming sugar and pour in 1/2 of the sugar mixture into my bottling...
Bumping this thread again...So how did the cider Apfelwein turn out? My father in law has an orchard so I thought I would try making some Apfelwein later this year after the apples are ready. Just curious to see if it turned out ok.
I tried a batch of Light Lager that a friend brewed some time ago. I remember that is tasted ok and was similar to the commercial stuff. My thought is basically the same as your quote above. Personally I would rather brew something different.
I have found that 2 pair of tongs work pretty well. Use one pair to grab the bag from the hot wort and then use the second pair to squeeze our the liquid gold. Haven't burned myself yet using this technique.
For your next batch, leave it in the primary for longer. I used to leave it in the primary only for 2 weeks, but got some good advice on HBT to leave it in longer (normally a month). My last few batches turned out awesome without any off flavors.
