Irish Red Ale Raging Red Irish Red Ale

I'm panning on doing an all grain brew in the near future (sooner if I can reduce a recipe to stove top size). I want to do a red. Can someone clarify one point for me. I know the boil time is 60 mins. So when someone says 1.00 oz Crystal [3.50 %] (60 min) are they adding this at the...

    Raised Chest Freezer

I was concerned with the hump too. I thought I could just go with a pump for racking but I'm not sure...

    Saskatoon Melomel

I agree! I am very eager to try this out. I hardly want to wait for it to finish. Part of me just want to stick a straw in barrel and start drinking... :mug:

    Raised Chest Freezer

I bottle. I will eventually be kegging but that is in cloudy future...

    Raised Chest Freezer

My current plan for lagering beer is to use a chest freezer and a stc 1000 temperature controller. I am choosing to use a chest freezer mostly for efficiency and they are fairly cheap to get used or even new if I have too. I am thinking of building a stand or something for the chest freezer...

    Saskatoon Melomel

You have point there - location is everything. If I was in NYC - I would be using what I could get from the store or juice. The farms around Calgary AB don't sell juice (well, as far as I know). But if they did I would be wary of any one that did mix cane sugars and water. If they did offer...

    My Keezer is done!

Shut up and take my money! I want one! That looks awesome! One of my next big jumps will be to kegging. Looking to do lagers and all-grain first. <sigh> <looks on your finished creation with dreamy eyes...>

    Questions from a newb brewer

I don't think it will cause a problem. While I use a primary bucket, I've heard many people fermenting a primary in a carboy. So, for those who forgo the carboy and keep it in your primary buckets, do you keep it in longer? (ie, primary time + secondary time)? or just tell the you get your...

    Filtering during racking

I use a Buon Vino Mini Jet for filter wine, just the medium pads. I did consider using this for the melomel as well, but would it reduce the quality in any way? Not sure...

    Saskatoon Melomel

We have a lot of u-picks around where I live. I never compared the price actually, I would guess that it can be cheaper at the store. But I would pay more for a better product than something imported from the store. When the next season opens up I will be paying more attention to the price.

    Questions from a newb brewer

Hmm, I still use a secondary, always have and probably always will. While I can see that it could increase the risk of harm to the beer - I have not experienced a bad batch due to this. I do keep my equipment very clean - is this a problem some brewers have? I can imagine a lot of cloudy...

    Filtering during racking

Did you ever filter your mead? I filter my wine. I don't filter my desert ports. I am making melomel at the moment and I'm considering filtering it prior to bottling.

I would argue that freshly grown berries are better than juice or store bought friut any day. Despite the price. I'm not saying that fresh grocery store bought fruit or 100% juice will not make a great wine or mead. But I would choose home grown or Farm fresh every time if I could. Just sample...

    Saskatoon Melomel

January 3rd (day 7). I've been stirring the Saskatoon melomel once every day or two. The yeast is still going at it. I took a gravity reading this evening - 1.054. About half way. I expected the primary fermentation to go for about 14 days. The colour is a bit of a rosy pink. Pressed a couple...

    Calgary Alberta - Hops Wanted

I went with Prairie Gem Hops. Had some good variety. Just have to get the planters ready.

    Saskatoon Melomel

I will have to check how juicy my berries are - if you think your berries are not juicy enough or have enough berries you could always do a smaller batch. I was just using a dry wine yeast because that was what I had on hand. I'm not sure what yeast nutrients I was using either - sorry. (Wow...

No I didn't. I did freeze the fruit though. This helps with juice extraction.

    Calgary Alberta - Hops Wanted

Hello! It is the middle of winter here so I'm preparing for spring 2016. I am going to start growing my own hops. I will be building a raised bed for them (for some reason the wife doesn't want them in vegetable garden...) and I am looking for some seeds or cuttings in the spring. Is...

Space heater in nonfunctional chest freezer

Space heater in a enclosed space is kinda of scary IMO - especially one that big. I would go with a light bulb in a metal coffee can or a ceramic heating lamp. With an external temperature controller as well to turn the lamp on or off. I personally keep my brews on a table in the basement...
