    Rye

No problem. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Contrary to what one of the 'judges' wrote at the bottom of the recipe, I didn't find this one 'spicy' either. I find it has more of a bread-like taste. It is certainly a foggy looking beer - but not at all unattractive. It's at moments...

Easy Way to Drain Wort Chiller?

Some great ideas here! Thanks everyone. Next brew day I'll try the hanging upside down method and see how much water come out! If I'm not satisfied I'll consider the thing-a-ma-jiggy suggested in the link.

    Rye

I came across this recipe on "NHC GOLD MEDAL HOMEBREW RECIPES 2004-2015": http://www.alternativecommutepueblo.com/2011/10/ahanhc-gold-medal-winning-recipes-for.html I've brewed it twice (scaling it down to 5 gallons) and I think it's fantastic. I upped the hops slightly as per the "judges...

Easy Way to Drain Wort Chiller?

I recently had to build a new copper immersion wort chiller because, stupid me, I was storing my old one outside in the winter in below freezing temperatures (amazingly it didn't break sooner in 3 years of brewing). The water inside froze and ripped right through the copper. So I built a new...

Help: Trying to choose a few good beers to start with.

I've found this to be an excellent resource: NHC GOLD MEDAL HOMEBREW RECIPES 2004-2015: http://www.alternativecommutepueblo.com/2011/10/ahanhc-gold-medal-winning-recipes-for.html

I Stuck My Whole Arm in the Fermenter ...

Ive done that before and my beer turned out great. Replica batches that didn't include my arm hair didn't turn out nearly as well. You just made liquid gold!

To re-pitch or not to re-pitch??

I haven't ever brewed that style, so take my advice cautiously: A FG of 1.040 seems extremely high to me and I've never known US-05 to have a reputation for stalling out easily. This would lead me to first check your hydrometer to make sure it's working properly (test it in water to make sure...

    Least "Spicey-Peppery" Saison Yeast?

Hi DrummoRC, Sorry for the really really late reply. It turned out absolutely fantastic (easily within the top 10 beers I've brewed), and even though we're in the dead of winter here in Canada, my girlfriend wants me to brew it again. I was scouring the thread for which yeast I used. I did...

    Copper refrigerant tubing for chillers

Thank you very much. That's very helpful.

    It is made in Canada.

    Copper refrigerant tubing for chillers

The old immersion chiller I made was destroyed by winter, so today I made a new one using 50 feet of 1/2" copper refrigerant tubing. A question came up about this tubing: does it contain any lead? While obviously copper drinking lines do not, I can't seem to find any information on this tubing...

    New Brew

This has been an incredible resource for me: NHC GOLD MEDAL HOMEBREW RECIPES 2004-2015 http://www.alternativecommutepueblo.com/2011/10/ahanhc-gold-medal-winning-recipes-for.html

How long is too long in secondary

I just tasted my first sample of an ale that was left in a cold-crashing secondary for 6 weeks. The holidays came and I got lazy. I was expecting it to taste like arse... but it turned out no different than the other 5 gallons that were only in secondary to cold crash for a few days (I split a...

    Rehydrated Yeast Question

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I boiled up a pound of extract with some spare hops, transferred the original brew to the fermenter and pitched the yeast I already had. The recommendation to house the yeast in a starter was the best idea and I would have done that had the wort not been cool...

    Rehydrated Yeast Question

I'm in Canada and this one cost me $8. I'll also need to take a second trip to the brew supply store.

    Rehydrated Yeast Question

My wort chiller failed, putting hose water into my brew. I realized the malfunction in time such that I only added about 20% extra water. I'll probably boil a bit of extract to get my numbers where I want them. While this obviously isn't ideal, the brew is salvageable. However, my question...

    How long will Wort keep

You can certainly let it wort sit without pitching the yeast. However, if any wild yeast/bacteria get in there then you increase the chance of them getting a foot-hold ahead of the intended yeast. If you can ferment them and let them sit for 3 weeks, that's ideal. But if you need to let the...

    Brown ale infection?

So far it looks good. Let the yeast clean up after itself in order to get rid of the fruity taste.

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

The one thing I never see come up in these threads is how much homebrew you give away compared to what you'd do with commercial beer. I probably give away around 25%+ of my homebrew, which in a strict sense increases the cost of every beer I drink.

    I'm a Noob + Zulu Beer project
