    Raise Fermentation Temp?

Hello folks, I have a quick question: I have a 5 gallon batch of Pliny the Elder fermeting in my basement (OG: 1.074). I used 2 packs of rehydrated US-05. My basement is unheated with an ambient temp of 60F. I brewed it on Thursday (4 days ago), the blow-off tube has been chugging along...

    Adding fruit to secondary

Out of curiosity, is there any reason why I'd want to transfer to a secondary vessel if I'm going to add fruit? I've heard all of the arguments in favour if not using a secondary in most circumstances, but I'm wondering why we'd suddenly want to use a secondary when there's, for example...

    Brew Kettle Dimensions

I went and pulled the trigger... But yeah, I wanted a second pot to do back to back batches faster and the volume (18 gallons) will allow me to do 10 gallon batches with comfort.

    Brew Kettle Dimensions

I'm looking at getting a second pot, but the one I'm looking at has the same diameter as its height. I hear several companies raving that they have a 1.2:1 height to diameter ratio (or something like that). Is there a reason I should be thinking about this, or should I just go ahead and pull...

Sparging - Am I doing it wrong???

This thread took an interesting turn. I have one pot (looking now into getting a second) and cooler for a mashtun. I usually do 2 batches back to back. The first batch I heat the sparge water shortly before the mash is done. After I drain everything (into buckets) I heat my strike water for...

Sparging - Am I doing it wrong???

ok, so would I be right in reading that the key difference between batch sparging and fly sparging is that in the batch sparge you completely drain the first runnings off first, whereas with fly sparge you don't. So in a fly-sparge, even though the runnings are trickling it out of the tun, the...

Sparging - Am I doing it wrong???

Well that's good news indeed. But I have to admit I'm still a little confused. I can see there being efficiency differences between batch and fly sparging, but a quick google search tells me that sparging too fast (I assume by whichever method) can lead to tannins and other off-flavours. Is...

Sparging - Am I doing it wrong???

Well Jesus H. Christ Almighty - I just figured out that in my last 4 years of brewing I may be sparging wrong. This is what I've been typically been doing -- I heat my sparge water up to around 168, I pour the entire thing into my cooler where all the grains reside, give it a mighty stir...

4500w BoilCoil vs 5500W ULW curved element

Thanks Chris! Out of curiosity, are you able to fire both your HLT and BK elements at the same time (say for example to either do back-to-back batches or to heat water faster using both the HLT and BK), or are you limited to only firing one element at a time? Thanks again!

New To Electric Brewing - Controller Recommendation?

Thanks everybody for the replies. A lot of food for thought here, and I have to admit that I'm not a heck of a lot closer to making any decisions. There seem to be a lot of potential details to control panels that I don't even know what they are. I'm going to have to do a lot more reading...

4500w BoilCoil vs 5500W ULW curved element

Hello everyone. Sorry to keep asking so many questions on here, but the next decision I have to make in setting up my 3-kettle HERMS brewery is which elements to go with, either the 4500w Blichmann Boil Coil or the 5500w ultra-low-density curved elements. I have a few questions about this...

    Electric Kettle Sizes

This is outstanding information indeed. Thank you! One further question - how do you partially cover your kettle - have you made a cut in your lid or do you just leave it slightly to one side, or something else? Thanks again!

2 Ventilation Questions for Indoor Electric Brewing

E-Brewing, can I ask where you got that cone from? It looks like you may have custom built it yourself. How thick is the sheet metal? Do you get any condensation dripping back down? Thanks very much!

New To Electric Brewing - Controller Recommendation?

I'm just starting to research electric brewing. I'm looking to do a 3-kettle HERMS setup, with each kettle being 15 gallons. Ideally I'd like a controller that will allow me to heat the coils in the MLT and BK at the same time (so I can more quickly do back to back batches), and control the...

    Electric Kettle Sizes

Thanks very much everybody. From what I'm learning the 15g kettle will certainly suffice. Also great to learn something else that wasn't the intention of the thread - that one can (and should?) partially cover the kettle during the boil. I also didn't know that one needn't boil as hard as the...

    10g batches in 18g kettle?

That's a fine kettle indeed, but the difference in dollar values (US vs Cdn) and the exorbitant cost of shipping things over the border (and potential to get wacked with duty), it actually makes it considerably more expensive for me than it appears.

    10g batches in 18g kettle?

These are the two I'm looking at. I was mistaken, the second one is 19g, instead of 20g. Prices are in Canadian dollars. 18g kettle: https://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/Mash_King_18_Gallon_Stainless_Steel_Welded_Brew_Ke_p/18gal-mashking-heavy-kettle.htm 19g kettle...

    10g batches in 18g kettle?

How comfortable is it to do 10 gallon batches in an 18 gallon kettle? I've tried it in a 15g kettle and it wasn't comfortable at all. I'd like to have the option of doing both 5g and 10g batches which I feel I don't currently have, and getting a second kettle will allow me to do back to back...

    Electric Kettle Sizes

Hello everybody! I'm currently an outdoor propane brewer, but I'd like to move indoors to an electric set-up in my basement, using the 3-kettle HERMS system. However, I'm having a lot of difficulty choosing kettle sizes. My biggest concern is the size of my boil kettle. I'd really like...
